James Oscar "Jimmy" Smith (December 8, 1925[1] or 1928[2] – February 8, 2005)[1][2] was an American jazz musician who achieved the rare distinction of releasing a series of instrumental jazz albums that often charted on Billboard. Smith helped popularize the Hammond B-3 electric organ, creating an indelible link between sixties soul and jazz improvisation.

In 2005, Smith was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest honor that the United States bestows upon jazz musicians.

Smith's birth year is of some confusion, with various sources citing either 1925 or 1928. Born James Oscar Smith in Norristown, Pennsylvania, at the age of six he joined his father doing a song-and-dance routine in clubs. He began teaching himself to play the piano. When he was nine, Smith won a Philadelphia radio talent contest as a boogie-woogie pianist.[5] After a stint in the navy, he began furthering his musical education in 1948, with a year at Royal Hamilton College of Music, then the Leo Ornstein School of Music in Philadelphia in 1949. He began exploring the Hammond organ in 1951. From 1951 to 1954 he played piano, then organ in Philly R&B bands like Don Gardner and the Sonotones. He switched to organ permanently in 1954 after hearing Wild Bill Davis.
He purchased his first Hammond organ, rented a warehouse to practice in and emerged after little more than a year. Upon hearing him playing in a Philadelphia club, Blue Note's Alfred Lion immediately signed him to the label and his second album, The Champ, quickly established Smith as a new star on the jazz scene. He was a prolific recording artist and, as a leader, dubbed The Incredible Jimmy Smith, he recorded around forty sessions for Blue Note in just eight years beginning in 1956. Albums from this period include The Sermon!, House Party, Home Cookin', Midnight Special, Back at the Chicken Shack and Prayer Meetin'.

Smith signed to the Verve label in 1962. His first album, Bashin', sold well and for the first time set Smith with a big band, led by Oliver Nelson. Further big band collaborations followed, most successfully with Lalo Schifrin for The Cat and guitarist Wes Montgomery, with whom he recorded two albums: The Dynamic Duo and Further Adventures Of Jimmy and Wes. Other notable albums from this period include Blue Bash and Organ Grinder Swing with Kenny Burrell, The Boss with George Benson, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Got My Mojo Working, and Root Down.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Smith recorded with some of the great jazz musicians of the day such as Kenny Burrell, George Benson, Grant Green, Stanley Turrentine, Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks, Jackie McLean, Grady Tate and Donald Bailey.

The Jimmy Smith Trio performed "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and "The Sermon" in the 1964 film Get Yourself a College Girl.

In the 1970s, Smith opened his own supper club in Los Angeles, California, and played there regularly with guitarist Paul C Saenz, Kenny Dixon on drums, Herman Riley and John F. Phillips on saxophone; also included in the band was harmonica/flute player Stanley Behrens. The 1972 album Root Down, considered a seminal influence on later generations of funk and hip-hop musicians, was recorded live at the club, albeit with a different group of backing musicians...

to take over Summer NAMM

CARLSBAD, Calif. – June 9, 2016 – Summer NAMM, the industry’s largest and most vibrant music products tradeshow returns to Nashville’s Music City Center June 23-25 for its biggest year yet. This year’s show will feature new and returning attendees from among the top brands in musical instruments, gear, technologies and accessories, and will include a robust line-up of artists who will perform all three days of the annual gathering.

Thursday, the first day of the show will end on a high note with a one-of-a kind performance from multi-instrumentalist, storyteller and living legend, Charlie Daniels. The Charlie Daniels Band is best known for their hits “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “The South’s Gonna Do It Again” among many others over the span of their 50+ year career. Daniels and band will treat Summer NAMM attendees to a memorable performance on the NAMM Nissan Terrace Stage starting at 6:00 p.m.

On Saturday at 1:00 p.m., the Terrace stage will welcome Texas-born and raised country singer and multi-instrumentalist, Craig Wayne Boyd. Boyd first came to prominence as the winner of the seventh season of The Voice (2014), where his singing voice, playing, and easy musical versatility made him a fan favorite on the show.

Saturday also welcomes the 33rd Annual American Eagle Awards. This year’s honorees include Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and the Grand Ole Opry. The American Eagle Awards honor individuals that have made significant contributions to the music in America. The awards are produced by the National American Music Council in cooperation with NAMM, and will be open to all Summer NAMM badge holders.

Each day of the Summer NAMM Show, the NAMM Nissan Terrace Stage will present live music beginning at 10:00 a.m. with an exciting lineup of artists with a variety of musical styles. MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Nomen est omen. Der Mann heißt Hammond und spielt eine Hammond. Der Organist aus New York freut sich auf Frankfurt und lädt zur Musikmesse Warm Up Party am 9.4. in den Jazzkeller ein.
JOURNAL FRANKFURT: Was war für Sie zuerst da - die Frankfurter Musikmesse oder Auftritte im Jazzkeller?
Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Ich kam 1987 zum ersten Mal nach Frankfurt, zusammen mit Joe Berger, der auf der Messe für Engl Amplifiers spielte. Wir flogen mit der Lufthansa ein und teilten uns ein Zimmer im berühmten Prinz Otto Hotel am Hauptbahnhof. Schon in der ersten Nacht stellte mir Joe den großen John Entwistle, den Bassisten von The Who vor. Es wurde eine lange Nacht, in der wir Cognac tranken und Erdnüsse knabberten in eiern Suite des Marriott Hotels. Ich habe Joe bei einer Session mit John und Ringo Starrs Sohn Zak Starkey im Dorian Grey Club gefilmt bei einer Soundcheck Party. In den ersten paar Jahren spielte ich nicht oft live weil ich noch keine transportierbare Hammond Orgel hatte vor 1991 als ich den Prototyp einer XB-2 Hammond Orgel bekam mit der ich dann um die Welt reiste. Hauptsächliche dokumenierte ich aber die Messe für meine Cable TV Show in New York, die inzwischen im 29. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show -- Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert. Die harten Nachrichten überlasse ich CNN und den großen Networks (lacht). Vom ersten Jahr an fühlten wir uns der Musikmesse eng verbunden, haben seitdem eine tolle Zeit hier, kommen jedes Jahr wieder bis wir kleine, alte Männer sind.

Das Jazzkeller-Konzert am Vorabend der Musikmesse ist zu einer netten Tradition geworden - wie kam es dazu, was bedeutet es Ihnen und wir werden Sie dieses Jahr diesen Abend im Jazzkeller zelebrieren?
Ab 1991 lernte ich mehr und mehr Musikmesse-Menschen kennen und die mich und auch einiges von meiner Musik. Einige von ihnen ermunterten mich, doch auch für Auftritte nach Deutschland zu kommen weil es hier doch ein Interesse an Hammond-Orgel-Groove-Music gab. Mit der schon erwähnten, kleinen, kompakten aber sehr kraftvollen Orgel war das alles möglich. Zudem machte ich in New York gerade eine schwere Zeit durch, mein Vater war gestorben und ich hatte das Gefühl, einige Veränderungen könnten meinem Leben gut tun. Also kam ich nach Frankfurt mit meiner XB-2, allerdings mit einem Rückflugticket falls etwas schief gehen würde. Ich rief viele Musiker an, ließ sie wissen, ich bin jetzt da, lasst uns zusammen spielen. Das war für mich der Anfang einer langen, sehr speziellen Beziehung, vor allem zum Frankfurter Publikum nach ersten kleinen erfolgen im Jazzkeller und einer kurzen Auftritt im Hessen Report im Fernsehen. Beatrix Rief verdanke ich dieses "lucky light on me", eine tolle Erfahrung. Seitdem nenne ich Frankfurt "My Good Luck City" und im Jazzkeller begann auch alles für mich als Musiker. Deshalb liegt mir der Club auch so nah am Herzen, deshalb hatte ich auch die Idee, meine "Musikmesse Warm Up Party" dort zu realisieren, immer in der Nacht bevor die Messe startet was zu einer schönen Tradition wurde. Im ersten Jahr, in dem ich dann auch ein wenig Sponsoring von Philip Morris bekam, konnte ich damit einige Flugtickets für befreundete Musik bezahlen. Darüber war ich sehr glücklich. Dabei rauche ich selbst gar nicht.

Wie würden Sie Ihr persönliches Verhältnis zu Deutschland und Frankfurt beschrieben?
Lassen Sie es mich so sagen: ich liebe Frankfurt und die Frankfurter waren immer gut zu mir in all den Jahren. Ich könnte ein ganzes Buch über die Zeit schreiben, in der ich in Bornheim wohnte und Nacht für Nacht in der alten Jazzkneipe in der Berliner Straße auftrat. Das war der Treffpunkt, wo auch die Musiker der HR Bigband hinkamen und es gab eine generöse Chefin in der kleinen Kneipe. Auch Regine Dobberschütz und Eugen Hahn im Jazzkeller waren wahre Jazzengel für mich, die mir so vieles ermöglichten in der Zeit. Wir konnten auch in den Studios von AFN Radio spielen, waren die einzigen Musiker, die das - mit einer Sondergenehmigung des US Militärs - durften. Für ein wenig Promotion für die Musikmesse. Wir nannten das Programm für die AFN "Profile TV "-Show "Sound Police". Wir hatten viel Spaß. Kein Wunder also, dass ich Frankfurt als my home away from home begreife und ich mich jedes Mal wieder freue zur Musikmesse zu reisen, in diesem Jahr übrigens zum 27. Mal in Folge. Und ich bin diesmal besonders aufgeregt, heim nach Frankfurt zu kommen weil ich gerade 60 Jahre alt geworden bin.

Wer wird in diesem Jahr zum Gelingen des Konzertes mit teils komponierter, teils improvisierter Musik, so nehme ich an, beitragen und was für einen Sound wird die Band präsentieren?
Ich habe etwa 90% der Kompositionen geschrieben, die wir spielen werden. Es ist die Musik, die man auch in meiner New Yorker TV-Show hören kann und die mich mehrmals um die Welt getragen hat. Meinen Stil nenne ich "Swinging Funky Jazz and Blues" und featurert die ganz wunderbaren Solisten in meine Band: Tony Lakatos, den großen ungarischen Tenorsaxophonisten, der auch Mitglied in der hr Bigband ist, dann meinen alten Freund Giovanni Gulino, diesen tollen Schlagzeuger, der schon für fast alle Großen der Szene getrommelt hat. Ich liebe diese Jungs. Als Gitarrist ist mein alten Freund und Kollege Joe Berger dabei, den man auch als The Berger-Meister kennt. Auf diese Formation bin ich wirklich stolz.

Werden Sie im Jazzkeller wieder eine Hammond Orgel spielen?
Ja, sicher, das neueste Modell, eine Sk1, die exakt so klingt wie die legendäre B3. Ich liebe sie. Und sie wiegt nur noch sieben Kilo (Anm. des Autors: Das Original, ein echtes Möbel mit viel Holz, mussten immer zwei Menschen mit viel Muskelkraft die Treppen rauf und runter hieven), ein deutliches Indiz, dass wir in der Zukunft angekommen sind. Da stecken viele Jahre Forschung und Entwicklung drin, auch Bühnenerprobungen. Ich ziehe den Hut vor den Ingenieuren von Suzuki, ein unverwüstliches Instrument erschaffen zu haben. Und das unterziehe ich jetzt einen echten Härttest (lacht). -- Interview: Detlef Kinsler

Mine in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, near Indian Lake and Shanksville, during an attempt by the passengers and crew to regain control, killing all 44 people aboard including the four hijackers. "A hundred years into its evolution, jazz incorporates ethnic and European classical instruments, drum machines and DJs spinning decks. A half-century or so ago, hardware habits were more cut and dried. A jazz big band had trumpets, trombones, saxes and a rhythm section. A small band had a rhythm section, a sax and trumpet, with maybe a guitar or a vibraphone. One that featured a (very quiet) guitarist, a flute or clarinet, a cellist, and a drummer who preferred mallets to sticks seemed a strange beast in the jazz forest.

But the groups of the American drummer Chico Hamilton, who has died aged 92, did feature such instrumentation and, contrary to the jazz orthodoxies of the 1950s, they were for a time runaway successes. Hamilton led west coast bands in that decade that came close to the popular acclaim of the area's biggest jazz stars, Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan. He also provided opportunities for many newcomers who became formidable musicians, including the saxophonists Eric Dolphy, Charles Lloyd and Arthur Blythe, and the guitarists Jim Hall, Gábor Szabó, Larry Coryell and John Abercrombie.

Some listeners regarded Hamilton's attempts to adapt a musical formula to the marketplace as wasting the improvisational talents of his creative partners. His early work was rarely given its proper due and it was only relatively recently that he came to be recognised as a completely distinctive drum school all to himself – a superb instrumentalist with a highly individual sound, a talented bandleader and a jazz visionary who believed the music could tap a far broader range of resources than it usually did. Hamilton once described the drums as "very melodic … Very soft, graceful in motion as well as sound; a sensuous, feminine instrument."

Hamilton played on the soundtrack to the film Sweet Smell of Success (1957); appeared in Bert Stern's famous 1958 Newport festival jazz documentary Jazz on a Summer's Day; and went on to work with musicians from many different backgrounds who had either studied with him or admired his achievements – including the former Spin Doctors guitarist Eric Schenkman and the Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts.

He was born Foreststorn Hamilton in Los Angeles and went to the city's Jefferson high school, where his contemporaries included the saxophonist Dexter Gordon. He rehearsed with many of the star pupils taught by the school's famous jazz teacher, Sam Browne.

Hamilton's models were the swing drummers Jo Jones and Sonny Greer, and when he left school he worked with the swing celebrities Lionel Hampton, Lester Young and Duke Ellington. But during the four years he then spent with the US army, jazz was turned on its head by the bebop revolution. The sound of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie may have dominated bop, but the underpinnings had radically changed too – jazz drumming was now more nervy, unpredictably accented, sometimes as busy as a permanent solo.

Hamilton avoided mimicking the brittle sound of the bop drummers, though he liked their rhythmic adventurousness. He began to evolve a personal style that gave a boppish edge to the four-square sound of swing drumming, without obliterating the subtle "talking" sonorities of drums. Discharged in 1946, Hamilton briefly joined Jimmy Mundy, but when his band fetched up, workless, in Salt Lake City, Hamilton went home to LA.

Already recognised as a fine big-band drummer, he worked for Charlie Barnet, briefly replaced Jones in Count Basie's orchestra and became the house drummer at Billy Berg's, one of the most celebrated west coast clubs. But between 1948 and 1955, Hamilton's most regular assignment was accompanying the singer Lena Horne. In 1952, on leave from a Horne tour, Hamilton began playing in the first version of Mulligan's pianoless quartet with Baker. He also played drums in the Bob Hope/Bing Crosby movie Road to Bali (1952), worked with the saxophonists Gordon and Wardell Gray, and with the singers Billy Eckstine, Nat "King" Cole and Sammy Davis Jr. He played at Billie Holiday's Carnegie Hall concert and on her album Lady Sings the Blues (both in 1956), but also struck out on his own.

The 50s Chico Hamilton Quintets, immensely popular in their day, have received mixed reactions since. Their use of strings could veer toward restaurant-soundtrack blandness, and sometimes bogged down the improvisations of an A-list of frontline soloists (including the obliquely imaginative guitarist Hall and the underrated saxophonist Buddy Collette). But in their exploration of fresh compositional ideas, subtlety of percussion texture, unusual instrumentation and understated swing, they were in some ways more quintessential distillations of west coast cool jazz than the music of Mulligan and Baker. Fred Katz, who had studied with Pablo Casals, became the quintet's cellist.

Hamilton toughened up the group's whispering sound in 1960, becoming bluesier and more vigorous, abandoning the cello and bringing in the trombonist Garnett Brown and a Coltranesque saxophonist, Lloyd. But by 1966 Hamilton was back to touring with Horne – though this time with a nucleus of his own band, including Szabó. He then formed Chico Hamilton Productions in among them one for Roman Polanski's Repulsion, and jingles for the advertising industry.

The rise of jazz-rock and fusion music in the 1970s led the constantly inquisitive Hamilton to investigate new sounds, with the saxophonist Arnie Lawrence remaining an anchor in the band while Hamilton brought in powerful newcomers such as Coryell. In 1975, he formed his Players band, including Blythe's soulful saxophone and the trombonist Steve Turre.

Through the 1980s Hamilton stayed on the road, and the Players group became Euphoria in 1987, with the addition of the guitarist Cary DeNigris. In 1994 Julian Benedikt made the documentary Chico Hamilton: Dancing to a Different Drummer and, in 2001, the indefatigable Hamilton brought back Blythe, Turre and others for a Euphoria reunion.

In 2001 Hamilton named a moving session – including Blythe, Turre and Watts – after his late son, Foreststorn. That year he played a packed Lincoln Centre with Euphoria in a show entitled My Funny Valentine: A Tribute to Chico Hamilton, and he sustained a stream of records throughout the decade. Four releases on the new Joyous Shout! label in 2006, to celebrate his 85th birthday, mixed fairly routine funky jazz with typical bursts of audacity (such as his jazz account of the Who's The Kids Are Alright), and he composed for and played with an expanded ensemble for the Twelve Tones of Love session in 2009. The following year he began weekly rehearsals in his New York apartment with Euphoria for the album Revelation. The recording turned out to be a dynamic set for a jazz artist of any age, let alone a drummer of 90. It was an energetically affectionate reminder of the many styles he had mastered and transformed – from swing to sambas, bebop, rock and funk.

Hamilton is survived by his daughter, Denise, his brother Don, one granddaughter and two great-granddaughters. His wife, Helen, and his brother Bernie, an actor who starred in Starsky and Hutch, both died in 2008.

Jon Hammond zum 27. Mal auf der Musikmesse

Nomen est omen. Der Mann heißt Hammond und spielt eine Hammond. Der Organist aus New York freut sich auf Frankfurt und lädt zur Musikmesse Warm Up Party am 9.4. in den Jazzkeller ein.

JOURNAL FRANKFURT: Was war für Sie zuerst da - die Frankfurter Musikmesse oder Auftritte im Jazzkeller?
Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Ich kam 1987 zum ersten Mal nach Frankfurt, zusammen mit Joe Berger, der auf der Messe für Engl Amplifiers spielte. Wir flogen mit der Lufthansa ein und teilten uns ein Zimmer im berühmten Prinz Otto Hotel am Hauptbahnhof. Schon in der ersten Nacht stellte mir Joe den großen John Entwistle, den Bassisten von The Who vor. Es wurde eine lange Nacht, in der wir Cognac tranken und Erdnüsse knabberten in eiern Suite des Marriott Hotels. Ich habe Joe bei einer Session mit John und Ringo Starrs Sohn Zak Starkey im Dorian Grey Club gefilmt bei einer Soundcheck Party. In den ersten paar Jahren spielte ich nicht oft live weil ich noch keine transportierbare Hammond Orgel hatte vor 1991 als ich den Prototyp einer XB-2 Hammond Orgel bekam mit der ich dann um die Welt reiste. Hauptsächliche dokumenierte ich aber die Messe für meine Cable TV Show in New York, die inzwischen im 29. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show -- Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert. Die harten Nachrichten überlasse ich CNN und den großen Networks (lacht). Vom ersten Jahr an fühlten wir uns der Musikmesse eng verbunden, haben seitdem eine tolle Zeit hier, kommen jedes Jahr wieder bis wir kleine, alte Männer sind.

Das Jazzkeller-Konzert am Vorabend der Musikmesse ist zu einer netten Tradition geworden - wie kam es dazu, was bedeutet es Ihnen und wir werden Sie dieses Jahr diesen Abend im Jazzkeller zelebrieren?
Ab 1991 lernte ich mehr und mehr Musikmesse-Menschen kennen und die mich und auch einiges von meiner Musik. Einige von ihnen ermunterten mich, doch auch für Auftritte nach Deutschland zu kommen weil es hier doch ein Interesse an Hammond-Orgel-Groove-Music gab. Mit der schon erwähnten, kleinen, kompakten aber sehr kraftvollen Orgel war das alles möglich. Zudem machte ich in New York gerade eine schwere Zeit durch, mein Vater war gestorben und ich hatte das Gefühl, einige Veränderungen könnten meinem Leben gut tun. Also kam ich nach Frankfurt mit meiner XB-2, allerdings mit einem Rückflugticket falls etwas schief gehen würde. Ich rief viele Musiker an, ließ sie wissen, ich bin jetzt da, lasst uns zusammen spielen. Das war für mich der Anfang einer langen, sehr speziellen Beziehung, vor allem zum Frankfurter Publikum nach ersten kleinen erfolgen im Jazzkeller und einer kurzen Auftritt im Hessen Report im Fernsehen. Beatrix Rief verdanke ich dieses "lucky light on me", eine tolle Erfahrung. Seitdem nenne ich Frankfurt "My Good Luck City" und im Jazzkeller begann auch alles für mich als Musiker. Deshalb liegt mir der Club auch so nah am Herzen, deshalb hatte ich auch die Idee, meine "Musikmesse Warm Up Party" dort zu realisieren, immer in der Nacht bevor die Messe startet was zu einer schönen Tradition wurde. Im ersten Jahr, in dem ich dann auch ein wenig Sponsoring von Philip Morris bekam, konnte ich damit einige Flugtickets für befreundete Musik bezahlen. Darüber war ich sehr glücklich. Dabei rauche ich selbst gar nicht.

Wie würden Sie Ihr persönliches Verhältnis zu Deutschland und Frankfurt beschrieben?
Lassen Sie es mich so sagen: ich liebe Frankfurt und die Frankfurter waren immer gut zu mir in all den Jahren. Ich könnte ein ganzes Buch über die Zeit schreiben, in der ich in Bornheim wohnte und Nacht für Nacht in der alten Jazzkneipe in der Berliner Straße auftrat. Das war der Treffpunkt, wo auch die Musiker der HR Bigband hinkamen und es gab eine generöse Chefin in der kleinen Kneipe. Auch Regine Dobberschütz und Eugen Hahn im Jazzkeller waren wahre Jazzengel für mich, die mir so vieles ermöglichten in der Zeit. Wir konnten auch in den Studios von AFN Radio spielen, waren die einzigen Musiker, die das - mit einer Sondergenehmigung des US Militärs - durften. Für ein wenig Promotion für die Musikmesse. Wir nannten das Programm für die AFN "Profile TV "-Show "Sound Police". Wir hatten viel Spaß. Kein Wunder also, dass ich Frankfurt als my home away from home begreife und ich mich jedes Mal wieder freue zur Musikmesse zu reisen, in diesem Jahr übrigens zum 27. Mal in Folge. Und ich bin diesmal besonders aufgeregt, heim nach Frankfurt zu kommen weil ich gerade 60 Jahre alt geworden bin.

Wer wird in diesem Jahr zum Gelingen des Konzertes mit teils komponierter, teils improvisierter Musik, so nehme ich an, beitragen und was für einen Sound wird die Band präsentieren?
Ich habe etwa 90% der Kompositionen geschrieben, die wir spielen werden. Es ist die Musik, die man auch in meiner New Yorker TV-Show hören kann und die mich mehrmals um die Welt getragen hat. Meinen Stil nenne ich "Swinging Funky Jazz and Blues" und featurert die ganz wunderbaren Solisten in meine Band: Tony Lakatos, den großen ungarischen Tenorsaxophonisten, der auch Mitglied in der hr Bigband ist, dann meinen alten Freund Giovanni Gulino, diesen tollen Schlagzeuger, der schon für fast alle Großen der Szene getrommelt hat. Ich liebe diese Jungs. Als Gitarrist ist mein alten Freund und Kollege Joe Berger dabei, den man auch als The Berger-Meister kennt. Auf diese Formation bin ich wirklich stolz.

Werden Sie im Jazzkeller wieder eine Hammond Orgel spielen?
Ja, sicher, das neueste Modell, eine Sk1, die exakt so klingt wie die legendäre B3. Ich liebe sie. Und sie wiegt nur noch sieben Kilo (Anm. des Autors: Das Original, ein echtes Möbel mit viel Holz, mussten immer zwei Menschen mit viel Muskelkraft die Treppen rauf und runter hieven), ein deutliches Indiz, dass wir in der Zukunft angekommen sind. Da stecken viele Jahre Forschung und Entwicklung drin, auch Bühnenerprobungen. Ich ziehe den Hut vor den Ingenieuren von Suzuki, ein unverwüstliches Instrument erschaffen zu haben. Und das unterziehe ich jetzt einen echten Härttest (lacht).

Jon Hammond's Hammond Funk Unit quintet is performing a 40 minute set of his original compositions as part of the Summer NAMM Showcase at the famous Music City Center, Nashville.

The concert is on Friday June 24th, 2pm to 2.40pm. California-based Jon Hammond is a jazz musician and radio presenter, best-known nowadays as an organist who regularly uses accordion in his group and for hospital and old folks concerts (picture below).

Jon Hammond wrote:
"Three of the musicians are Nashville based: R Barber (trombone), Louis ‘Flip’ Winfield (drums), Cord Martin (tenor saxophone) plus my long-time guitarist Joe Berger and myself on Hamond organ - both Joe and myself are officially from New York City, although I am also in California a lot - I’m still a New Yorker!

There is a very strong chance that Lee Oskar will be joining us as Special Guest. I can’t guarantee that Lee will be onstage with us. We recently talked about doing it when we met at the ASCAP Pop Awards in Hollywood last month. He told me that he will be there and is going to try to make it, so we are going to have the stage set up for that, we have played together several times over the years.

Lee was an award recipient at the ASCAP Pop Awards and besides being the original member of the legendary band WAR, he manufactures his own line of Lee Oskar Harmonicas that have been very popular with Blues and Rock performers for years.

Here we are in Hollywood a couple of weeks ago, with Lee wearing the medal he was awarded."

Jon Hammond is a musician, composer, bandleader, publisher, journalist, TV show host, radio DJ, and multi-media entrepreneur. He currently travels the world, playing gigs and attending trade shows.

THE EARLY YEARS
Jon Hammond was born in Chicago in 1953. His father was a doctor and his mother was a housewife. They both played the piano. In 1957, his parents moved Jon and his four sisters to Berkeley, CA, where his father worked in a hospital as head of the emergency room. When he was nine, Jon started accordion lessons. “In those days, they had studios where parents would drop their kids off after school for tap dancing and accordion lessons. There were accordion bands and they would compete against each other.”

“Every time I see a musician walking down the street I say, ‘Hey, where’s the gig?’ Because it doesn’t matter what kind of music you play, if you’re carrying an instrument–going to a rehearsal, or coming back from a repair shop, whatever it is–we all need our gigs. And that’s what the union is all about. Hopefully, we can all keep working and be supportive of everybody’s gigs. There’s room for everybody.”

Jon played his first gig at a senior citizens luncheon when he was eleven. Not only did he get a free lunch but he was paid $25 –a lot of money in those days. Jon says his father was supportive, but did not want him to pursue a music career. “He told me that music was a great hobby. He got me a wonderful professional accordion for my Bar Mitzvah, directly from John Molinari, one of the greatest accordionists who ever lived. It was a Guilietti Professional Tone Chamber accordion. That’s the accordion I won Jr. Jazz Champion on in 1966.”

In high school, Jon attended a private boys school in San Francisco. He was a class clown, and when it got to the point where he was going to be expelled, Jon took his accordion and ran away from home. He immersed himself in the San Francisco music scene and started playing organ in several bands. By 1971 he was in a four piece rock group called Hades which shared a rehearsal space with Quicksilver Messenger Service. “I was friends with their manager, Ron Polte, who also managed guitarist John Cipollina. We got to open for his band, Copperhead.”

Jon continued to play gigs in the Bay Area in different configurations, including a few gigs with a young Eddie Money. By this time Jon had become frustrated with the Bay Area scene. One night while playing a biker bar he got into a fight and his band didn’t come to his defense. “That was the last straw. I was angry and I said I wasn’t coming back.”

Jon moved to Boston in 1973 to attend the Berklee School of Music. He also got a gig playing in Boston’s Combat Zone backing up burlesque shows. When Jon saw one of his idols, pianist Keith Jarrett play in New York he told him he was going to Berklee and asked him for advice. “Keith looked me right in the eye and said ‘Berklee can be very dangerous for your music.’ It was like he popped this huge bubble. Years later I came to understand what he was talking about. You have to learn the fundamentals, but the music itself comes from a much deeper place. They can’t teach that, you have to find it yourself.”

When Jon’s teachers began sitting in on his gigs in Boston, he questioned why he was in school if the teachers were coming to play with him. He quit school, moved to Cape Cod and started playing with bandleader Lou Colombo. “He did all the private parties for Tip O’Neill. We played what they used to call the business man’s beat. On the gig it was forbidden to swing. It was like swing cut in half. So if you tried to go with the four, Lou would say, ‘Don’t swing it, don’t swing it.’ He pounded it into my head night after night.”

LATE RENT

In 1981 Jon took a trip to Paris where he broke through his writers block and wrote some of his best music. He returned to New York with his new tunes and started a production company with the idea of getting a record deal for a friend that had played on a #1 hit record. After months of pounding the pavement with no results, Jon realized he had better work on his own music before his money ran out. He took the last of his savings, including his upcoming rent money, and went into the studio to record what came to be known as “The Late Rent Sessions”.

The session had Todd Anderson on tenor sax, Barry Finnerty on guitar, Stephen Ferrone on drums, and Jon on B3. They recorded at Intergalactic, the last studio that John Lennon recorded in. Jon had no luck getting a record deal for his new project, but he did get gigs in New York with his band Jon Hammond and the Late Rent Session Men.

n 1982, Jon found out about public access television and the idea that anyone could produce a show and get it on TV. He started broadcasting on Manhattan’s public station in 1984. “I decided I was going to produce a radio show on TV. The first episodes showed just my tapping foot and my voice. It was a gimmick. We had graphics that were synchronized to go with the music. It worked out well. People dug it.” Within a few weeks, Jon was interviewed and featured in Billboard Magazine. The Jon Hammond Show was considered an alternative to the clips on Cable TV. “MTV was still in its infancy. We had a concept that was revolutionary. My phone started ringing and we were the hot kids on the block.”

LIVING ABROAD

Jon continued to play gigs in New York and produce his TV show. In 1987, he went to his first trade show (NAMM) where he was introduced to Mr. Julio Guilietti, the man who built his accordion. He then began traveling to trade shows and making contacts with musicians and companies around the world, including Hammond Suzuki. “They gave me the Hammond XB-2, the first really powerful portable Hammond organ. Glenn Derringer, one of my all-time heroes, presented it to me. I got one of the first. Paul Shaffer from the Letterman Show got the other. At the time there was only one EXP-100 expression pedal–we had to share the pedal. I used the pedal for my gigs and when Paul needed it I would bring it over to him at 30 Rockefeller Center on my bicycle.”

In the early 90s, when his New York gigs began drying up, Jon was encouraged to go to Germany. “It was a hard time. My father had just died and there were very few gigs. I got the XB-2 organ right when I needed it, so I decided to take a chance. I bought a roundtrip ticket to Frankfurt with an open return. I went with 50 bucks and stayed for a year. When I came back, I had 100 bucks.”

Jon stayed at a friend’s house and played a borrowed accordion on the street until he could get a band together. “I played on the street until my fingers turned blue and would collect enough money to get some fish soup. After about two weeks I got a call—I had put a band together and had 3 gigs coming up. A TV show had heard my story and wanted to do a story on me. At the first gig 19 people came; the second only 15 people came. Then I got the little spot on TV. When I came to the third gig people were lined up down the street. When I walked up I thought they were having an art exhibit. When they said, ‘No, they’re waiting for you.’ I choked up, I couldn’t even talk. So I’ve been playing there every year since. The people in Germany really saved my musical career at a time when very few things were happening for me in New York or San Francisco. I have a really good following in Europe. I keep busy as a musician in the States, playing hospitals and assisted living places, but my band dates I pretty much play overseas.”

Jon’s Late Rent Sessions was eventually released on a German label and received modest airplay. During the 90s he travelled back and forth to Europe, spending a year playing gigs in Paris, and eventually settling in Hamburg. Since then he has released two more albums and has played gigs in Moscow, Shanghai, and Australia. With the help of the internet, Jon is able to produce his TV show anywhere.

PRESENT DAY

In the mid-2000s Jon produced Hammondcast, a radio program for CBS that aired in San Francisco at four in the morning and was rebroadcast before Oakland A’s games. “When the baseball games played in the afternoon, my show would play for about 20 minutes and then it was pre-empted. I had a lot of fun with that.” His guests included Danny Glover, Barry Melton from Country Joe & the Fish, and many local people. “It took me awhile to figure out that I had permission to broadcast anything I wanted. I could play the London Philharmonic or Stevie Wonder. My tag line was ‘Hello, Hello, Hello! Wake up or go back to sleep…’”

Today, Jon continues to visit tradeshows and is determined to keep doing everything he does as long as he can. “I made a pact with my longtime co-producer, guitarist Joe Berger, that we are going to go to these trade shows until we are little old men with canes.

Wow folks, I was there! This was very nearly the biggest Rock Music Festival that almost happened - it was very close. I went to many meetings with Ron Polte and a lot of very heavy San Francisco Rock bands were down to play the "Wild West Festival" (1969) Posters were already made up, we had meetings in the Zoetrope building now owned by Francis Ford Coppola and The Straight Theatre on Haight Street - Ron Polte was part owner of Straight Theatre in addition to being the manager of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Ace of Cups and for a time Sons of Champlin as well. I highly recommend watching and listening to this very rare footage of the press conference with Big Daddy Tom Donahue speaking about the project - Jon Hammond *long-time member Local 6 Musicians Union (but not then!)

Tom Donahue (1928-75), who discusses the Wild West Rock Festival that was to have taken place in Golden Gate Park but was cancelled due to protests by locals. Donahue believes that even though the concert never happened, this was a positive experience for the San Francisco community. He states that: "We also felt that a great deal of the good things that have come out of the artistic community in this country have originated in San Francisco. That it's a starting point. Thay may sound chauvanistic but I also think it's the truth." Ends with brief comments from another spokesman, who refers to the "unecessary and ... unwarranted paranoia" that the Wild West project had to deal with. It is worth noting that Donahue was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a non-peformer, one of only three disc jockeys to receive that honor to date (2011). What a gem! Great organ sound from that little keyboard. Terry Haggerty is unbelievable. I've listened to him for years but never had such a great close up of his fingering on one of his blistering solos. Phenomenal!

to take over Summer NAMM

CARLSBAD, Calif. – June 9, 2016 – Summer NAMM, the industry’s largest and most vibrant music products tradeshow returns to Nashville’s Music City Center June 23-25 for its biggest year yet. This year’s show will feature new and returning attendees from among the top brands in musical instruments, gear, technologies and accessories, and will include a robust line-up of artists who will perform all three days of the annual gathering.

Thursday, the first day of the show will end on a high note with a one-of-a kind performance from multi-instrumentalist, storyteller and living legend, Charlie Daniels. The Charlie Daniels Band is best known for their hits “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “The South’s Gonna Do It Again” among many others over the span of their 50+ year career. Daniels and band will treat Summer NAMM attendees to a memorable performance on the NAMM Nissan Terrace Stage starting at 6:00 p.m.

On Saturday at 1:00 p.m., the Terrace stage will welcome Texas-born and raised country singer and multi-instrumentalist, Craig Wayne Boyd. Boyd first came to prominence as the winner of the seventh season of The Voice (2014), where his singing voice, playing, and easy musical versatility made him a fan favorite on the show.

Saturday also welcomes the 33rd Annual American Eagle Awards. This year’s honorees include Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and the Grand Ole Opry. The American Eagle Awards honor individuals that have made significant contributions to the music in America. The awards are produced by the National American Music Council in cooperation with NAMM, and will be open to all Summer NAMM badge holders.

Each day of the Summer NAMM Show, the NAMM Nissan Terrace Stage will present live music beginning at 10:00 a.m. with an exciting lineup of artists with a variety of musical styles. Thursday’s lineup includes soul/rock artist Paul Childers, country singer Lauren Alexander, and acoustic double neck guitarist Ian Ethan Case, among others. On Friday, the dynamic duo and fingerstylings of the Constable Sisters, singer/songwriter Josh Farrow, country act Brian Rhea, and more will provide for an entertaining day of live music. Saturday’s acts include guitarist Jeff Radford and pop/country duo the Truman Brothers, as well as other talented acts.

Jon Hammond's Hammond Funk Unit quintet is performing a 40 minute set of his original compositions as part of the Summer NAMM Showcase at the famous Music City Center, Nashville.

The concert is on Friday June 24th, 2pm to 2.40pm. California-based Jon Hammond is a jazz musician and radio presenter, best-known nowadays as an organist who regularly uses accordion in his group and for hospital and old folks concerts (picture below).

Jon Hammond wrote:
"Three of the musicians are Nashville based: R Barber (trombone), Louis ‘Flip’ Winfield (drums), Cord Martin (tenor saxophone) plus my long-time guitarist Joe Berger and myself on Hamond organ - both Joe and myself are officially from New York City, although I am also in California a lot - I’m still a New Yorker!

There is a very strong chance that Lee Oskar will be joining us as Special Guest. I can’t guarantee that Lee will be onstage with us. We recently talked about doing it when we met at the ASCAP Pop Awards in Hollywood last month. He told me that he will be there and is going to try to make it, so we are going to have the stage set up for that, we have played together several times over the years.

Lee was an award recipient at the ASCAP Pop Awards and besides being the original member of the legendary band WAR, he manufactures his own line of Lee Oskar Harmonicas that have been very popular with Blues and Rock performers for years.

Here we are in Hollywood a couple of weeks ago, with Lee wearing the medal he was awarded."

Jon Hammond is a musician, composer, bandleader, publisher, journalist, TV show host, radio DJ, and multi-media entrepreneur. He currently travels the world, playing gigs and attending trade shows.

THE EARLY YEARS
Jon Hammond was born in Chicago in 1953. His father was a doctor and his mother was a housewife. They both played the piano. In 1957, his parents moved Jon and his four sisters to Berkeley, CA, where his father worked in a hospital as head of the emergency room. When he was nine, Jon started accordion lessons. “In those days, they had studios where parents would drop their kids off after school for tap dancing and accordion lessons. There were accordion bands and they would compete against each other.”

“Every time I see a musician walking down the street I say, ‘Hey, where’s the gig?’ Because it doesn’t matter what kind of music you play, if you’re carrying an instrument–going to a rehearsal, or coming back from a repair shop, whatever it is–we all need our gigs. And that’s what the union is all about. Hopefully, we can all keep working and be supportive of everybody’s gigs. There’s room for everybody.”

Jon played his first gig at a senior citizens luncheon when he was eleven. Not only did he get a free lunch but he was paid $25 –a lot of money in those days. Jon says his father was supportive, but did not want him to pursue a music career. “He told me that music was a great hobby. He got me a wonderful professional accordion for my Bar Mitzvah, directly from John Molinari, one of the greatest accordionists who ever lived. It was a Guilietti Professional Tone Chamber accordion. That’s the accordion I won Jr. Jazz Champion on in 1966.”

In high school, Jon attended a private boys school in San Francisco. He was a class clown, and when it got to the point where he was going to be expelled, Jon took his accordion and ran away from home. He immersed himself in the San Francisco music scene and started playing organ in several bands. By 1971 he was in a four piece rock group called Hades which shared a rehearsal space with Quicksilver Messenger Service. “I was friends with their manager, Ron Polte, who also managed guitarist John Cipollina. We got to open for his band, Copperhead.”

Jon continued to play gigs in the Bay Area in different configurations, including a few gigs with a young Eddie Money. By this time Jon had become frustrated with the Bay Area scene. One night while playing a biker bar he got into a fight and his band didn’t come to his defense. “That was the last straw. I was angry and I said I wasn’t coming back.”

Jon moved to Boston in 1973 to attend the Berklee School of Music. He also got a gig playing in Boston’s Combat Zone backing up burlesque shows. When Jon saw one of his idols, pianist Keith Jarrett play in New York he told him he was going to Berklee and asked him for advice. “Keith looked me right in the eye and said ‘Berklee can be very dangerous for your music.’ It was like he popped this huge bubble. Years later I came to understand what he was talking about. You have to learn the fundamentals, but the music itself comes from a much deeper place. They can’t teach that, you have to find it yourself.”

When Jon’s teachers began sitting in on his gigs in Boston, he questioned why he was in school if the teachers were coming to play with him. He quit school, moved to Cape Cod and started playing with bandleader Lou Colombo. “He did all the private parties for Tip O’Neill. We played what they used to call the business man’s beat. On the gig it was forbidden to swing. It was like swing cut in half. So if you tried to go with the four, Lou would say, ‘Don’t swing it, don’t swing it.’ He pounded it into my head night after night.”

LATE RENT

In 1981 Jon took a trip to Paris where he broke through his writers block and wrote some of his best music. He returned to New York with his new tunes and started a production company with the idea of getting a record deal for a friend that had played on a #1 hit record. After months of pounding the pavement with no results, Jon realized he had better work on his own music before his money ran out. He took the last of his savings, including his upcoming rent money, and went into the studio to record what came to be known as “The Late Rent Sessions”.

The session had Todd Anderson on tenor sax, Barry Finnerty on guitar, Stephen Ferrone on drums, and Jon on B3. They recorded at Intergalactic, the last studio that John Lennon recorded in. Jon had no luck getting a record deal for his new project, but he did get gigs in New York with his band Jon Hammond and the Late Rent Session Men.

n 1982, Jon found out about public access television and the idea that anyone could produce a show and get it on TV. He started broadcasting on Manhattan’s public station in 1984. “I decided I was going to produce a radio show on TV. The first episodes showed just my tapping foot and my voice. It was a gimmick. We had graphics that were synchronized to go with the music. It worked out well. People dug it.” Within a few weeks, Jon was interviewed and featured in Billboard Magazine. The Jon Hammond Show was considered an alternative to the clips on Cable TV. “MTV was still in its infancy. We had a concept that was revolutionary. My phone started ringing and we were the hot kids on the block.”

LIVING ABROAD

Jon continued to play gigs in New York and produce his TV show. In 1987, he went to his first trade show (NAMM) where he was introduced to Mr. Julio Guilietti, the man who built his accordion. He then began traveling to trade shows and making contacts with musicians and companies around the world, including Hammond Suzuki. “They gave me the Hammond XB-2, the first really powerful portable Hammond organ. Glenn Derringer, one of my all-time heroes, presented it to me. I got one of the first. Paul Shaffer from the Letterman Show got the other. At the time there was only one EXP-100 expression pedal–we had to share the pedal. I used the pedal for my gigs and when Paul needed it I would bring it over to him at 30 Rockefeller Center on my bicycle.”

In the early 90s, when his New York gigs began drying up, Jon was encouraged to go to Germany. “It was a hard time. My father had just died and there were very few gigs. I got the XB-2 organ right when I needed it, so I decided to take a chance. I bought a roundtrip ticket to Frankfurt with an open return. I went with 50 bucks and stayed for a year. When I came back, I had 100 bucks.”

Jon stayed at a friend’s house and played a borrowed accordion on the street until he could get a band together. “I played on the street until my fingers turned blue and would collect enough money to get some fish soup. After about two weeks I got a call—I had put a band together and had 3 gigs coming up. A TV show had heard my story and wanted to do a story on me. At the first gig 19 people came; the second only 15 people came. Then I got the little spot on TV. When I came to the third gig people were lined up down the street. When I walked up I thought they were having an art exhibit. When they said, ‘No, they’re waiting for you.’ I choked up, I couldn’t even talk. So I’ve been playing there every year since. The people in Germany really saved my musical career at a time when very few things were happening for me in New York or San Francisco. I have a really good following in Europe. I keep busy as a musician in the States, playing hospitals and assisted living places, but my band dates I pretty much play overseas.”

Jon’s Late Rent Sessions was eventually released on a German label and received modest airplay. During the 90s he travelled back and forth to Europe, spending a year playing gigs in Paris, and eventually settling in Hamburg. Since then he has released two more albums and has played gigs in Moscow, Shanghai, and Australia. With the help of the internet, Jon is able to produce his TV show anywhere.

PRESENT DAY

In the mid-2000s Jon produced Hammondcast, a radio program for CBS that aired in San Francisco at four in the morning and was rebroadcast before Oakland A’s games. “When the baseball games played in the afternoon, my show would play for about 20 minutes and then it was pre-empted. I had a lot of fun with that.” His guests included Danny Glover, Barry Melton from Country Joe & the Fish, and many local people. “It took me awhile to figure out that I had permission to broadcast anything I wanted. I could play the London Philharmonic or Stevie Wonder. My tag line was ‘Hello, Hello, Hello! Wake up or go back to sleep…’”

Today, Jon continues to visit tradeshows and is determined to keep doing everything he does as long as he can. “I made a pact with my longtime co-producer, guitarist Joe Berger, that we are going to go to these trade shows until we are little old men with canes.”

Wow folks, I was there! This was very nearly the biggest Rock Music Festival that almost happened - it was very close. I went to many meetings with Ron Polte and a lot of very heavy San Francisco Rock bands were down to play the "Wild West Festival" (1969) Posters were already made up, we had meetings in the Zoetrope building now owned by Francis Ford Coppola and The Straight Theatre on Haight Street - Ron Polte was part owner of Straight Theatre in addition to being the manager of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Ace of Cups and for a time Sons of Champlin as well. I highly recommend watching and listening to this very rare footage of the press conference with Big Daddy Tom Donahue speaking about the project - Jon Hammond *long-time member Local 6 Musicians Union (but not then!)

What a gem! Great organ sound from that little keyboard. Terry Haggerty is unbelievable. I've listened to him for years but never had such a great close up of his fingering on one of his blistering solos. Phenomenal!

June 28 issue - Venice Beach native Danny Woody is living the California dream. He drms in a jazz band at night, then tours motorcycle shops by day. "But who would have imagined," he says, "that I'd be doing it in Shanghai!"

Woody, 59, is a fixture at the Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel lounge, but his real claim to fame is a motorbike with sidecar on display in the lobby. The Chang Jiang is a Chinese knockoff of the classic 1930s BMW R-71. During World War II, the Germans gave the design to Russia, which passed it to China. Woody fell in love with it on a 1998 trip to Beijing. He bought one, and another. Soon, he had shops refurbishing them. Now he's a top vendor of the bikes, which have a global cult following. In 2003 he sold two dozen for about $10,000 each. "It's not really a dream job, more like a nightmare," he quips..

JON HAMMOND: “WHERE’S THE GIG?” - Alex Walsh

Jon Hammond is a musician, composer, bandleader, publisher, journalist, TV show host, radio DJ, and multi-media entrepreneur. He currently travels the world, playing gigs and attending trade shows.

“Every time I see a musician walking down the street I say, ‘Hey, where’s the gig?’ Because it doesn’t matter what kind of music you play, if you’re carrying an instrument–going to a rehearsal, or coming back from a repair shop, whatever it is–we all need our gigs. And that’s what the union is all about. Hopefully, we can all keep working and be supportive of everybody’s gigs. There’s room for everybody.”

THE EARLY YEARS
Jon Hammond was born in Chicago in 1953. His father was a doctor and his mother was a housewife. They both played the piano. In 1957, his parents moved Jon and his four sisters to Berkeley, CA, where his father worked in a hospital as head of the emergency room. When he was nine, Jon started accordion lessons. “In those days, they had studios where parents would drop their kids off after school for tap dancing and accordion lessons. There were accordion bands and they would compete against each other.”

Jon played his first gig at a senior citizens luncheon when he was eleven. Not only did he get a free lunch but he was paid $25 –a lot of money in those days. Jon says his father was supportive, but did not want him to pursue a music career. “He told me that music was a great hobby. He got me a wonderful professional accordion for my Bar Mitzvah, directly from John Molinari, one of the greatest accordionists who ever lived. It was a Guilietti Professional Tone Chamber accordion. That’s the accordion I won Jr. Jazz Champion on in 1966.”

In high school, Jon attended a private boys school in San Francisco. He was a class clown, and when it got to the point where he was going to be expelled, Jon took his accordion and ran away from home. He immersed himself in the San Francisco music scene and started playing organ in several bands. By 1971 he was in a four piece rock group called Hades which shared a rehearsal space with Quicksilver Messenger Service. “I was friends with their manager, Ron Polte, who also managed guitarist John Cipollina. We got to open for his band, Copperhead.”

Jon continued to play gigs in the Bay Area in different configurations, including a few gigs with a young Eddie Money. By this time Jon had become frustrated with the Bay Area scene. One night while playing a biker bar he got into a fight and his band didn’t come to his defense. “That was the last straw. I was angry and I said I wasn’t coming back.”

Jon moved to Boston in 1973 to attend the Berklee School of Music. He also got a gig playing in Boston’s Combat Zone backing up burlesque shows. When Jon saw one of his idols, pianist Keith Jarrett play in New York he told him he was going to Berklee and asked him for advice. “Keith looked me right in the eye and said ‘Berklee can be very dangerous for your music.’ It was like he popped this huge bubble. Years later I came to understand what he was talking about. You have to learn the fundamentals, but the music itself comes from a much deeper place. They can’t teach that, you have to find it yourself.”

When Jon’s teachers began sitting in on his gigs in Boston, he questioned why he was in school if the teachers were coming to play with him. He quit school, moved to Cape Cod and started playing with bandleader Lou Colombo. “He did all the private parties for Tip O’Neill. We played what they used to call the business man’s beat. On the gig it was forbidden to swing. It was like swing cut in half. So if you tried to go with the four, Lou would say, ‘Don’t swing it, don’t swing it.’ He pounded it into my head night after night.”

LATE RENT
In 1981 Jon took a trip to Paris where he broke through his writers block and wrote some of his best music. He returned to New York with his new tunes and started a production company with the idea of getting a record deal for a friend that had played on a #1 hit record. After months of pounding the pavement with no results, Jon realized he had better work on his own music before his money ran out. He took the last of his savings, including his upcoming rent money, and went into the studio to record what came to be known as “The Late Rent Sessions”.

The session had Todd Anderson on tenor sax, Barry Finnerty on guitar, Stephen Ferrone on drums, and Jon on B3. They recorded at Intergalactic, the last studio that John Lennon recorded in. Jon had no luck getting a record deal for his new project, but he did get gigs in New York with his band Jon Hammond and the Late Rent Session Men.

In 1982, Jon found out about public access television and the idea that anyone could produce a show and get it on TV. He started broadcasting on Manhattan’s public station in 1984. “I decided I was going to produce a radio show on TV. The first episodes showed just my tapping foot and my voice. It was a gimmick. We had graphics that were synchronized to go with the music. It worked out well. People dug it.” Within a few weeks, Jon was interviewed and featured in Billboard Magazine. The Jon Hammond Show was considered an alternative to the clips on Cable TV. “MTV was still in its infancy. We had a concept that was revolutionary. My phone started ringing and we were the hot kids on the block.”

LIVING ABROAD
Jon continued to play gigs in New York and produce his TV show. In 1987, he went to his first trade show (NAMM) where he was introduced to Mr. Julio Guilietti, the man who built his accordion. He then began traveling to trade shows and making contacts with musicians and companies around the world, including Hammond Suzuki. “They gave me the Hammond XB-2, the first really powerful portable Hammond organ. Glenn Derringer, one of my all-time heroes, presented it to me. I got one of the first. Paul Shaffer from the Letterman Show got the other. At the time there was only one EXP-100 expression pedal–we had to share the pedal. I used the pedal for my gigs and when Paul needed it I would bring it over to him at 30 Rockefeller Center on my bicycle.”

In the early 90s, when his New York gigs began drying up, Jon was encouraged to go to Germany. “It was a hard time. My father had just died and there were very few gigs. I got the XB-2 organ right when I needed it, so I decided to take a chance. I bought a roundtrip ticket to Frankfurt with an open return. I went with 50 bucks and stayed for a year. When I came back, I had 100 bucks.”

Jon stayed at a friend’s house and played a borrowed accordion on the street until he could get a band together. “I played on the street until my fingers turned blue and would collect enough money to get some fish soup. After about two weeks I got a call—I had put a band together and had 3 gigs coming up. A TV show had heard my story and wanted to do a story on me. At the first gig 19 people came; the second only 15 people came. Then I got the little spot on TV. When I came to the third gig people were lined up down the street. When I walked up I thought they were having an art exhibit. When they said, ‘No, they’re waiting for you.’ I choked up, I couldn’t even talk. So I’ve been playing there every year since. The people in Germany really saved my musical career at a time when very few things were happening for me in New York or San Francisco. I have a really good following in Europe. I keep busy as a musician in the States, playing hospitals and assisted living places, but my band dates I pretty much play overseas.”

Jon’s Late Rent Sessions was eventually released on a German label and received modest airplay. During the 90s he travelled back and forth to Europe, spending a year playing gigs in Paris, and eventually settling in Hamburg. Since then he has released two more albums and has played gigs in Moscow, Shanghai, and Australia. With the help of the internet, Jon is able to produce his TV show anywhere.

PRESENT DAY
In the mid-2000s Jon produced Hammondcast, a radio program for CBS that aired in San Francisco at four in the morning and was rebroadcast before Oakland A’s games. “When the baseball games played in the afternoon, my show would play for about 20 minutes and then it was pre-empted. I had a lot of fun with that.” His guests included Danny Glover, Barry Melton from Country Joe & the Fish, and many local people. “It took me awhile to figure out that I had permission to broadcast anything I wanted. I could play the London Philharmonic or Stevie Wonder. My tag line was ‘Hello, Hello, Hello! Wake up or go back to sleep…’”

Today, Jon continues to visit tradeshows and is determined to keep doing everything he does as long as he can. “I made a pact with my longtime co-producer, guitarist Joe Berger, that we are going to go to these trade shows until we are little old men with canes.”

JON HAMMOND Instruments: Organ, Accordion, Piano, Guitar Attended: Berklee College of Music 1974, City College San Francisco Languages: English, German Jon is closely identified with the two main products of his career, the Excelsior Accordion and the Hammond Organ. Musician: Jon Hammond is one of the premier B3 PLAYERS in the world. Jon has played professionally since age 12. Beginning as a solo accordionist, he later played Hammond B3 organ in a number of important San Francisco bands. His all original group HADES opened shows for Tower of Power, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Michael Bloomfield. Eddie Money and Barry Finnerty became musical associates. Moving East he attended Berklee College of Music and played venues as diverse as Boston's "Combat Zone" in the striptease clubs during the '70's and the exclusive Wychmere Harbor Club in Cape Cod, where he was house organist with the late great trumpet player Lou Colombo and developed a lasting friendship with House Speaker Tip O'Neill. He also toured the Northeast and Canada with the successful show revue "Easy Living", and continued his appearances at nightclubs in Boston and New York. Subsequently Hammond lived and traveled in Europe, where he has an enthusiastic following. TV/Video Producer: In 1981 Jon formed BackBeat Productions. Assisted by Lori Friedman (Video by LORI), the innovative TV show "The Jon Hammond Show" became a Manhattan Cable TV favorite. Jon's "Live on the street" video style included news events, as well as live music/video clips of Dizzy Gillespie, Paul Butterfield, Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, Sammy Davis Jr., Percy Sledge and many others. Folks, something told me I had better get on down to see my main man Lou Colombo last week

in Fort Myers FL, I played on Lou's band for 2.5 years in Cape Cod at the Wychmere Harbor Club

and Thompson's Clam Bar in Harwich Port MA. It was an important time of my life and career and

he was always very generous to me, kept me on my toes throwing tunes at me in all keys the music

never stopped once we hit.

I just saw Lou a few days ago in Fort Myers FL at the gig he was playing at his Daughter Sherri's restaurant

and hub Marc Neeley - Roadhouse Cafe, he was at the top of his game, playing great as ever and looking like a

million dollars. I am deeply saddened to receive terrible tragic news this morning from Lou's fine trombonist

Nelson E. Foucht that Lou was tragically killed last night just 4 blocks from Roadhouse Cafe coming home from the

gig. My deepest condolences to the Colombo Family, Lou's Wife Noel, daughters Lori, Sherri, David all his 6 kids, extended

Family of friends and musicians. I am totally blown away, thankful that I had the opportunity to know him and play with

him nightly back in the 70's and then to see and hear him again at the end of his life, thanks Lou!

Here are some photos from just a few days taken by my long-time great girlfriend Jennifer and myself at his gig,

R.I.P. Big Lou - Louis Colombo the greatest trumpet player bandleader baseball slugger and golfer ever!

I used to go with Lou to the golf course where he had the snack concession in Yarmouth just to watch him drive

balls in to outer space. I couldn't believe how far and hard he could hit the ball. Lou would put on black

executioner gloves and hit the ball and it would disappear, just keep on sailing in to the sky like Lou's spirit

must be now. His music and great memories will live on forever.

*Note: Lou called me on my cell phone when I was at the airport just about to fly out of Tampa TPA Airport, he told me he really dug

my album that I had given him "NDR SESSIONS Projekt" my first record of mostly standards, it was inspired much by him actually. Lou

was talking about the horn players on it, Lutz Buechner and Joe "Jo" Gallardo, he really dug them and he told me we were going to do

something back up in the Cape for sure. I was very touched by his call and he had called me on my previous birthday last year, I got

all choked up when he told me that. Thanks a million Lou!

Jon Hammond here...I just came back from visiting my main man Lou Colombo the great trumpet player bandleader and former Pro Baseball player in Fort Myers Florida. I played on Lou's band for 2.5 years in the late 70's in house band at the Wychmere Harbor Club in Cape Cod. Lou is going strong happy to report, playing regularly at the restaurant of his daughter Sherri and son inlaw Marc Neeley - Roadhouse Cafe during winter months and in the summer he plays at his son David's Roadhouse Cafe in Hyannis MA on Cape Cod. I schlepped my Hammond Sk1 organ all the way down there in hopes I could sit in with Lou for a couple of tunes but unfortunately that wasn't possible, however I shot some video of Lou and his fine group, so enjoy the music and personality of Lou Colombo, one of the all-time greats on his instrument!

This is my Hammond Sk1 Organ in GKPE-49-TSA Gator Flight Case after I finally got it back from Newark EWR Airport after flying with it to Fort Myers from San Francisco, then taking it to Lou's gig at Roadhouse Cafe, flying to JFK but my organ went to Newark by mistake. It was supposed to be delivered but they never even left the airport with it, so I took a bus ride back out to New Jersey from Times Square and picked it up personally. You can see the big INSPECTED sticker that TSA plastered of my American Federation of Musicians Union sticker. 2 days later I flew with it to San Francisco for a gig and that's where I am now with my Sk1 Hammond Organ.

I'll be playing some selections rough mixes (not so rough actually!) as my Christmas gift to the listeners, and speaking of Christmas...from inside San Francisco County Jail #8 "Pod E", a live recording of my trio's annual Christmas Prison Show with the great tenor saxophonist Larry Schneider & Ronnie Smith Jr. on drums along with myself on keys playing the Christmas classic: "Have Yourself a Merry Christmas". Every year I tell the ladies "And ya' better be good!"

Massachusetts man killed in south Fort Myers crash

An 84-year-old man from South Yarmouth, Massachusetts was killed late Saturday night in a vehicle crash at the intersection of McGregor Boulevard and Kapok Court in south Fort Myers.

Louis Colombo was killed when he turned west onto McGregor Boulevard, pulling out in front of a Jeep Wrangler heading north.

The Wrangler, driven by Hunter Blackburn, struck the left side of Colombo's minivan and later hit a fire hydrant, cutting off water in the area for about three hours.

Blackburn, 52, was not injured.

Lou Colombo, the heart beat of jazz on Cape Cod for more than half a century was killed late Saturday night in a car crash in Fort Myers, Fla.

According to the Fort Myers Press News, Colombo, 84, was killed when he turned onto McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers, and was struck by a vehicle heading north.

"Jon Hammond here...I just came back from visiting my main man Lou Colombo the great trumpet player bandleader and former Pro Baseball player in Fort Myers Florida. I played on Lou's band for 2.5 years in the late 70's in house band at the Wychmere Harbor Club in Cape Cod. Lou is going strong happy to report, playing regularly at the restaurant of his daughter Sherri and son inlaw Marc Neeley - Roadhouse Cafe during winter months and in the summer he plays at his son David's Roadhouse Cafe in Hyannis MA on Cape Cod. I schlepped my Hammond Sk1 organ all the way down there in hopes I could sit in with Lou for a couple of tunes but unfortunately that wasn't possible, however I shot some video of Lou and his fine group, so enjoy the music and personality of Lou Colombo, one of the all-time greats on his instrument!
The musicians on Lou's band here at Roadhouse Cafe are Nelson Foucht on trombone, F.L. "Woody" Brubaker piano and keyboard bass, Richard Iannuzzi drums and Gil DiBenedetto tenor saxophone and clarinet.

Friends say Colombo was returning to his winter home after a performance last night.

Born and raised in Brockton, Colombo began playing trumpet at age 12. He joined the military as a young man and had dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. He played for seven years, but a badly broken ankle forced his retirement from the Brooklyn Dodgers at the age of 24. Baseball's loss became music's gain.

Colombo played with some of the world's great jazz musicians including Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. He taught generations of musicians through his love of jazz, played performances in clubs, restaurants, schools and nursing homes on the Cape.

In a July 1988 interview with Eric Jackson on WGBH, Gillespie said of him, "Lou Colombo is what I would call a trumpet painter, he resolves. He starts playing and the notes keep going, but the chord keeps changing all the time. He's a marvelous trumpet player.

"I went one night to hear him play. Boy, he asked me to play with him and I said ‘No- you got it Brother. I'm not going to jump into that hot water'. Lou's pretty weird the way he plays because he plays with just one hand. He plays the valves with his right hand but doesn't hold the horn with his left hand. This guy's amazing. I've been preaching his name ever since that night I first heard him down on Cape Cod ."

Locally Colombo was renown as a teacher and generous performer who frequently asked young musicians to play with him, said Paul Nossiter, veteran jazz musician and long time friend of Colombo who makes his home on the Cape.

"He was a giant..an open-hearted, generous man and musician who loved his family, his friends, music and food," Nossiter said. "This is a terrible loss for his family and friends, a real loss for Cape Cod."

Most of the day I stayed in the room practicing my instrument and looking out at Red Square. Jennifer and I wanted to get to the club early so that we could get a sound check and settle in. Faina picked us up and we stuffed my organ and all our equipment in her compact car and off we went to Le Club in the Taganka Theatre Building.
When we arrived the big friendly doormen picked up my heavy cases like they were toothpicks and brought them up the stairs for me! Vladimir the sound engineer for the club was very smooth and professional, and a very nice guy. We got a good sound on the organ and then came Eduard Zizak the great drummer! I had already met Eduard in New York the week before when he was there performing with Igor's quartet at Birdland. Eduard is an incredible drummer and also a very nice guy. We made a little soundcheck and right away I could tell that he had listened to my music and we would lock up with some very tight grooves...no problem!
But where was Igor? I was hoping for a little mini-rehearsel with Igor but when I saw the public coming in to have dinner I knew it was too late for that! Igor arrived with his entourage and it was great to see him...he told me not to worry and apologised for not coming earlier. Igor is in big demand with a very busy schedule, so I am very lucky and honored that he could take the time to perform with me together even as his new cd album "Prophecy" was just released on the Universal Label.
We had time only for a 5 minute soundcheck and I showed Igor my book. This was going to be a very spontaneous performance, no doubt about it!
We decided to record it, and Vladimir did a fantastic job on the recording on their new digital recording console that they had just brought back from New York.

From the first notes I knew that this would be one of those magic nights I would never forget. The response from the audience was wonderful. I could only say in Russsian, "Ya LuBlu Vas"...which means, I love you all. And when I said the words to the people I got a great feeling back from them. First set was just fine and then on the break I was introduced to many press people and some fantastic local musicians. I was very honored that they all came to greet me. And then Igor proudly introduced me to 2 of the legendary jazz musicians of Moscow-accordionist Vladimir Danilin and guitarist Alexei Kuznezov. They said they had their instruments in the car and so yes we decided right away to make a live session together.
It was incredible from the first song on the 2nd set, playing together with these fantastic Moscow musicians! It felt like we had been playing together for 20 years. These musicians are some of the greatest I have ever heard and played together with. The audience was loving every bit of it, just as much as I! I was so happy that Vladimir was getting it all on tape and Jennifer was also running the video machine and taking pictures also. By the end of the night I was very satisfied with how everything went. Igor personally drove Jennifer and I back to the hotel in his nice car with fantastic sound system.

Trauer um Lutz Büchner

"Lutz Büchner wurde 47 Jahre alt.

Der Saxofonist Lutz Büchner ist am 11. März während einer Japan-Tour der NDR Bigband im Alter von 47 Jahren an den Folgen eines Herzinfarkts verstorben. Es war ein großes Glück für die NDR Bigband, den Menschen und Musiker Lutz Büchner seit 22 Jahren in ihren Reihen zu haben. Er war ein grandioser, ein wahrhaft bedeutender Saxofonist mit einer unverkennbaren, einzigartigen Spielweise, die selbst dem ältesten und schon oft gehörten Jazzstandard immer wieder neue Seiten abgewinnen konnte. Vor allem aber brachte er auch seine Persönlichkeit in die Band ein: seinen Humor, sein ausgeglichenes Temperament und sein großes Interesse an allen Dingen des Lebens, das weit über die Musik hinaus reichte. Lutz Büchner war ein echter Teamplayer, vor und hinter den Kulissen.

Ich habe ihn als einen liebenswürdigen Menschen erlebt, der leidenschaftlich mit und für Musik lebte. Lutz Büchner hatte den Jazz im Blut. Er liebte den spielerischen Umgang mit der Musik, die Improvisation. Der Tod dieses beeindruckenden Saxofonisten ist für die NDR Bigband, für den NDR, ein großer Verlust. Meine Gedanken sind in diesen Stunden bei der Familie und den Freunden Lutz Büchners."

Fasziniert von Miles Davis
Lutz Büchner wurde am 5. August 1968 in Bremen geboren. Er interessierte sich schon früh für Musik, bekam klassischen Klarinettenunterricht und entdeckte als Teenager nach einem Konzertbesuch den Jazz. Als er den Trompeter Miles Davis hörte, faszinierte ihn die Möglichkeit, sich auch jenseits der geschrieben Noten auf eine ganz persönliche Weise ausdrücken zu können. Dieser improvisierten, sich immer neu erfindenden Musik wollte er sich widmen.

Lutz Büchner kam nach Hamburg und studierte Saxofon bei Herb Geller, dem damals bekanntesten Solisten der NDR Bigband. Schon bald spielte er dort im Saxofonsatz - zunächst als Gast, seit 1994 als festes Mitglied. In den Mittelpunkt zog es ihn, den eher besonnen Menschen, dabei nicht so sehr. Aber wenn das Scheinwerferlicht auf ihn zeigte und er zum Solo ansetzte, dann entwickelte sein Spiel eine ganz besondere Wirkung: Mit geschlossenen Augen stand er da, die Töne flossen ebenso überraschend wie logisch aus seinem Instrument, sein ganzer Körper schien sich dabei in Musik zu verwandeln.

In seinem Spiel steckte besondere Tiefe
Viele Gäste der NDR Bigband haben ihn und sein Spiel so erlebt und geschätzt: Jazzgrößen wie Al Jarreau, Bobby McFerrin, João Bosco, Omar Sosa oder Abdullah Ibrahim genossen es, wenn Lutz Büchner neben ihnen spielte. Der Amerikaner Dale Wilson widmete ihm und seinem Saxofon-Kollegen Fiete Felsch eine ganze Big-Band-Suite, und die Komponistin Maria Schneider wollte ihn nach einem Besuch bei der NDR Bigband am liebsten gleich nach New York mitnehmen. Es waren nicht nur seine technischen Fertigkeiten und seine nahezu grenzenlosen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten, mit denen Lutz Büchner so begeisterte. In seinem Spiel steckte eine besondere Tiefe. "Es ist sein Sound", sagte Maria Schneider einmal, "Lutz berührt mich."

Solistische Höhenflüge und zarte Lyrik
In der Improvisation spiegelt sich ja immer der ganze Mensch. So konnte Lutz Büchner auf dem Tenorsaxofon unendlich packend, mitreißend und kraftvoll spielen. Unvergessen ist sein solistischer Höhenflug in der Duke-Ellington-Hommage "Diminuendo, crescendo and crescendissimo in blue", in der er minutenlang ein loderndes Feuer immer neu entfachte, bis die Zuschauer bei einem Auftritt der NDR Bigband in New York am Schluss buchstäblich aus den Sitzen gerissen wurden. Seine andere, lyrische Seite war besonders stark auf der Klarinette zu hören, auf der er zu den außergewöhnlichsten Stimmen des modernen Jazz zählte, vielleicht sogar weltweit. Intim und zart, wie gehaucht schwebten die Töne in die Luft, jeder von ihnen hatte Bedeutung.

Nicht nur in der NDR Bigband, auch in eigenen Formationen waren sein ausgeprägtes Spiel und seine ausgefeilten Kompositionen zu hören. Mit seinem Quartett (mit Sandra Hempel, Heinz Lichius und Pepe Berns) trat Lutz Büchner 2005 bei den 2. Hamburger Jazztagen in der Kampnagel-Fabrik auf. Im selben Jahr entstand mit dem Trio Connex (mit Björn Lücker und Philipp Steen) ein gleichnamiges Album, und 2006 erschien seine vielbeachtete, von der Kritik hochgelobte CD "Ring".

"Mein Ziel ist es", hat Lutz Büchner einmal gesagt, "ganz im Moment zu spielen." Wir verdanken ihm viele unvergessliche Momente. Mit ihm verlieren wir einen lieben Menschen, einen großen Künstler und einen wunderbaren Kollegen.

-  JOURNAL FRANKFURT: Was war für Sie zuerst da - die Frankfurter Musikmesse oder Auftritte im Jazzkeller? Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Ich kam 1987 zum ersten Mal nach Frankfurt, zusammen mit Joe Berger, der auf der Messe für Engl Amplifiers spielte. Wir flogen mit der Lufthansa ein und teilten uns ein Zimmer im berühmten Prinz Otto Hotel am Hauptbahnhof. Schon in der ersten Nacht stellte mir Joe den großen John Entwistle, den Bassisten von The Who vor. Es wurde eine lange Nacht, in der wir Cognac tranken und Erdnüsse knabberten in eiern Suite des Marriott Hotels. Ich habe Joe bei einer Session mit John und Ringo Starrs Sohn Zak Starkey im Dorian Grey Club gefilmt bei einer Soundcheck Party. In den ersten paar Jahren spielte ich nicht oft live weil ich noch keine transportierbare Hammond Orgel hatte vor 1991 als ich den Prototyp einer XB-2 Hammond Orgel bekam mit der ich dann um die Welt reiste. Hauptsächliche dokumenierte ich aber die Messe für meine Cable TV Show in New York, die inzwischen im 29. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show -- Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert. Die harten Nachrichten überlasse ich CNN und den großen Networks (lacht). Vom ersten Jahr an fühlten wir uns der Musikmesse eng verbunden, haben seitdem eine tolle Zeit hier, kommen jedes Jahr wieder bis wir kleine, alte Männer sind.  Das Jazzkeller-Konzert am Vorabend der Musikmesse ist zu einer netten Tradition geworden - wie kam es dazu, was bedeutet es Ihnen und wir werden Sie dieses Jahr diesen Abend im Jazzkeller zelebrieren? Ab 1991 lernte ich mehr und mehr Musikmesse-Menschen kennen und die mich und auch einiges von meiner Musik. Einige von ihnen ermunterten mich, doch auch für Auftritte nach Deutschland zu kommen weil es hier doch ein Interesse an Hammond-Orgel-Groove-Music gab. Mit der schon erwähnten, kleinen, kompakten aber sehr kraftvollen Orgel war das alles möglich. Zudem machte ich in New York gerade eine schwere Zeit durch, mein Vater war gestorben und ich hatte das Gefühl, einige Veränderungen könnten meinem Leben gut tun. Also kam ich nach Frankfurt mit meiner XB-2, allerdings mit einem Rückflugticket falls etwas schief gehen würde. Ich rief viele Musiker an, ließ sie wissen, ich bin jetzt da, lasst uns zusammen spielen. Das war für mich der Anfang einer langen, sehr speziellen Beziehung, vor allem zum Frankfurter Publikum nach ersten kleinen erfolgen im Jazzkeller und einer kurzen Auftritt im Hessen Report im Fernsehen. Beatrix Rief verdanke ich dieses "lucky light on me", eine tolle Erfahrung. Seitdem nenne ich Frankfurt "My Good Luck City" und im Jazzkeller begann auch alles für mich als Musiker. Deshalb liegt mir der Club auch so nah am Herzen, deshalb hatte ich auch die Idee, meine "Musikmesse Warm Up Party" dort zu realisieren, immer in der Nacht bevor die Messe startet was zu einer schönen Tradition wurde. Im ersten Jahr, in dem ich dann auch ein wenig Sponsoring von Philip Morris bekam, konnte ich damit einige Flugtickets für befreundete Musik bezahlen. Darüber war ich sehr glücklich. Dabei rauche ich selbst gar nicht.  Für ein wenig Promotion für die Musikmesse. Wir nannten das Programm für die AFN "Profile TV "-Show "Sound Police". Wir hatten viel Spaß. Kein Wunder also, dass ich Frankfurt als my home away from home begreife und ich mich jedes Mal wieder freue zur Musikmesse zu reisen, in diesem Jahr übrigens zum 27. Mal in Folge. Und ich bin diesmal besonders aufgeregt, heim nach Frankfurt zu kommen weil ich gerade 60 Jahre alt geworden bin.  Wer wird in diesem Jahr zum Gelingen des Konzertes mit teils komponierter, teils improvisierter Musik, so nehme ich an, beitragen und was für einen Sound wird die Band präsentieren? Ich habe etwa 90% der Kompositionen geschrieben, die wir spielen werden. Es ist die Musik, die man auch in meiner New Yorker TV-Show hören kann und die mich mehrmals um die Welt getragen hat. Meinen Stil nenne ich "Swinging Funky Jazz and Blues" und featurert die ganz wunderbaren Solisten in meine Band: Tony Lakatos, den großen ungarischen Tenorsaxophonisten, der auch Mitglied in der hr Bigband ist, dann meinen alten Freund Totó Giovanni Gulino, diesen tollen Schlagzeuger, Und das unterziehe ich jetzt einen echten Härttest (lacht). 27.
