Today's story and music, actual audio from inside San Francisco County Jail #8 "Pod E" one of Jon Hammond Band's 12th annual concerts, you can hear the ladies getting down with "Funky Stuff In Your Pocket" joined in on Jon's tune "Pocket Funk" with drummer Jon Otis and Marc Baum tenor sax - the story of pocket funk. Tonight be sure to watch the skies for the full Strawberry Moon eclipse! Good news, the curfew was lifted last night, so back out on the trail over 12,000 steps on health walking. New camera is on the way from Panasonic, after I accidentally dropped and destroyed my old hard-working Lumixcamera. Next camera will be the Lumix ZS100, it's been out for about 4 years now. Good little camera. Howdy to my friends at B&H Photo Video Pro Audio and thanks Bob Kovacs for his solid expert advice, Bob also uses a ZS100 and he's got the super bad GH5 as well! Hammond Report June 3 2020 from Pandemic Quarantino Jon Hammond - my daily check in folks, original music and stories from the old organ grinder accordion squeezer!

Today's music and stories start in good old Kimball's East in Emeryville CA, live recording of my band back in Oct. 11th of 1998 after I returned from living in Europe. With the help of my friend Scott Rootenberg we brought Bernard Purdie out from New Jersey - I played 2 nights, this one in Kimball's and Scott's Club The Cocodrie in North Beach SF - my tune "Hip Hop Chitlins" aka Nu Funk with Barry Finnerty in the string section and Bennett Friedman t.s. - then a 1981 recording I did for DTI Records of my tune "Get Back In The Groove" with Frank Biner on vocals and guitar and yours truly at the B3 organ and covering the bass as well. Stay safe out there everybody, a change is gonna' come!!

Jon Hammond plays organ, accordion, piano and guitar. He attended Berklee College of Music
Hammond performs in hospitals, nursing homes and prisons every month in addition to concerts world-wide. He is one of the premier B3 players in the world, playing professionally since age 12. Beginning as a solo accordionist, he later played the Hammond B3 organ in a number of important San Francisco bands. His all original group HADES opened shows for Tower of Power, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Michael Bloomfield. Eddie Money and Barry Finnerty, became musical associates.
In Boston he played the “Combat Zone” and in the striptease clubs during the ’70’s and the exclusive Wychmere Harbor Club in Cape Cod, where he was house organist and developed a lasting friendship with House Speaker Tip O’Neill. He toured the Northeast and Canada with the successful show revue “Easy Living”, and continued his appearances in Boston, New York. and Europe.

In 1981 Jon formed BackBeat Productions and his TV show “The Jon Hammond Show” became a Manhattan Cable TV favorite. Jon’s “Live on the street” saw him with Dizzy Gillespie, Paul Butterfield, Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, Sammy Davis Jr., Percy Sledge and many others. The weekly show is now in it’s 23rd year and has influenced the broadcasts of David Letterman and others. Billboard Magazine hailed Jon’s show as “The Alternative to MTV”. The Jon Hammond Show can be seen worldwide at various times streaming

T2C: What has this time stopped you from accomplishing?

Jon Hammond: I’m a long-time performer in nursing homes & hospitals, we can no longer deliver the music, and I had annual gigs in Europe canceled for first time in over 30 years.

T2C: If you were to equate this time to a song or song cycle what would it be?

Jon Hammond: I wrote a song some years ago to play in annual San Francisco County Jail gig, it is entitled: “Soon I Will Be Free” – sort of apropos during this time as we are waiting out a lot of things.

for helping me transfer the original audio reel-to-reel tape to preserve the recording we made that day. The oxide was starting to deteriorate and peel off the tape master, but we saved it, thanks Steve! I had a big organ rig back then, my Hammond A-103 with 2 Leslies stacked up that I bought from Boz Scaggs - we almost got signed by Warner Bros. Records but the vocals were a little weak, Peter Moreno from Warner Bros. wanted me to get a real lead singer and he was right - we practiced 5 days a week with this band and played all over Northern California and Lake Tahoe - Jerry Figone was our manager, Jim Thorsen played my Gibson Byrdland on this date, enjoy folks - better day(s) tomorrow!! -

After very heavy night still in quarantino, going back 26 years to revisit live broadcast in the studios of AFN Europe Frankfurt Headquarters with host Margie Glatt on AFN Powerlite Show on the MW / AM side of the band at 873 AM with 150,000 big watts!

Some actual footage inside the studio which unfortunately no longer exists. My friends in Germany used to call it "The American Radio" - Jon Hammond Band original composition "Lydia's Tune"

with James Preston drums, Barry Finnerty guitar, myself Jon Hammond at the XB-2 Hammond organ and sound engineer Joe Berger at the controls. This broadcast was concurrent with the Musikmesse - we hope to be back next year! - Jon Hammond

Frank Owens is the legendary pianist: "Owens played in New York in 1966 with Clifford Jordan, with whom the first recordings were made, in the following years with Harvey Brooks, Ernie Wilkins, Louis Armstrong, Bobbi Humphrey, Sonny Stitt and Bucky Pizzarelli; he also accompanied vocalists such as Astrud Gilberto, Sylvia Syms, Trudy Richards, Lena Horne and Ruth Brown. In 1969 he put the soul jazz album Oliver! Olé! (Columbia), followed by Brown’s Serve (Encounter Records, 1973), on which u. a. Bernard Purdie and Hugh McCracken participated, as well as Frank Owens Plays the Music of Eddie Heywood. He also worked as a pianist for various Broadway productions such as Ain't Misbehavin, Maurice Hines ’Uptown It's Hot! and Sophisticated Ladies, 1980 as musical director of the first David Letterman Show. He also appeared on the television shows It's Showtime at the Apollo, Eubie Blake: A Century of Music (PBS) and Christmas in Washington (TNT). During his career he worked as musical director for Johnny Mathis, Chubby Checker, Melba Moore, Johnny Nash, Connie Francis, John Denver, Irene Cara, Lesley Gore, Freda Payne, Petula Clark and Keith David. He also participated in numerous television commercials. In the field of jazz he was involved in 38 recording sessions between 1966 and 2005"

Organist Accordionist Jon Hammond checking in from Pandemic Quarantino daily update, today's music "Jennifer's Song" and story about Jon's special invitation on to a Russian cruise ship in the Hamburg port / Hafen - at night the party was going on and the Russians were toasting the band and Jon with Vodka "Joooonnn Haaammond!!...Nastarovya!!" and then down another shot of Vodka! It was an all night beautiful cruise down and back on the Elbe River, a very pleasant surprise not planned!

Jon Hammond - today's story about my Uncle Bernie aka Sonny.

When I was growing up in Chicago everybody told me I looked like Sonny, so they started calling me Sonny. My uncle came back from WWII with part of his leg shot off, all war is terrible I learned at young age - his war time watch was an old Rolex Speed King, I have now inherited from my Mom and it's running just fine. The song playing in the background is my funk tune "Head Phone" with a feature of congas & percussionist Chuggy Carter from a gig we played in the big apple a few years ago and is on my first album "Late Rent" - everybody stay safe and keep your masks on when you go out in the public folks! c u in a minute,
