Air France Airbus A380 - aka "Flying Forehead"! - Jon Hammond

"Some unofficial nicknames of Airbus A380 are flying forehead, mammoth jet, Whale Jet flying.

Green Giant is also unofficial nickname of Airbus A380. Low fuel consumption of the engines and pollutant levels far below the levels required by the strictest of standards are behind the justifying of this name."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus_A380
The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner manufactured by Airbus. It is the world's largest passenger airliner, and the airports at which it operates have upgraded facilities to accommodate it. It was initially named Airbus A3XX and designed to challenge Boeing's monopoly in the large-aircraft market. The A380 made its first flight on 27 April 2005 and entered commercial service in October 2007 with Singapore Airlines.

The A380's upper deck extends along the entire length of the fuselage, with a width equivalent to a wide-body aircraft. This gives the A380-800's cabin 478 square metres (5,145.1 sq ft) of usable floor space, 40% more than the next largest airliner, the Boeing 747-8,[4] and provides seating for 525 people in a typical three-class configuration or up to 853 people in an all-economy class configuration. The A380-800 has a design range of 8,500 nautical miles (15,700 km)

The Famous Tall Paul of West Oakland:

The Famous Tall Orange Bicycle Man of West Oakland Sighted today aka "Tall Paul" - Jon Hammond "THIS MAN IS TRANSFORMING OAKLAND ONE AWESOME CUSTOM BIKE AT A TIME"

Photo: ©JON HAMMOND International
http://www.thebolditalic.com/articles/7062-this-man-is-transforming-oakland-one-awesome-custom-bike-at-a-time
by R. A. SCHUETZ
Mar 20 at 6am
I first met Tall Paul as he was walking out of the Oakland Home Depot toting a giraffe of a bike. It was orange with gold accents — pedals, spokes, and pinwheel-shaped mags — and its body was made of interlocking triangles stacked so tall the handlebars stood at roughly my height. I was impressed and asked if I could take a closer look. “Of course,” he said, and began showing it off.
Tall Paul is tall — over six feet — with soft, dark curls he usually hides under a baseball cap. He’s cordial, but when he starts talking bikes, a kind of electric and childlike wonder steals over him. You can’t help but feel enthusiastic too. When I asked how he mounts such an ungainly ride, he demonstrated by giving it a shove as he jogged a few steps beside it, then he clambered up the triangles of the frame like they were a ladder. “Where did you get it?” I asked him. “I made it,” he said.
Patting his bike, he explained: “Last fall, I was out with one of the double-stackers when I saw a couple of kids cutting school. They were about 10 years old; I saw them cutting class all of the time. And when I saw the kids, I saw they were excited about the bike. They were like, ‘Wow!’ And I thought, ‘Hey, that might be something I can do to get them back in class.’”
Paul made the two boys an offer: if they went back to school and got three A’s on their next report cards, he’d give each of them a bike. “And it worked,” he said, laughing. “They turned out to be really smart kids. They just got caught up messing around in the streets and cutting school and stuff. They’d been doing it for a while.”
Now Paul has a standing offer to reward any kid who makes three A’s on his or her report card. While Paul doesn’t have the resources to give everyone a bike, if an A student brings him a frame to work with — even if it’s so rusted it no longer runs — he restores and customizes it.
He invited me to come by and watch him work on his bikes sometime. He lives near the Home Depot in a mobile home “parked illegally,” which, I later learned, means he stays put for street sweeping because he’s cultivated relationships with city employees, who sometimes chip in a few dollars for the bikes he’s fixing up for students. That he’s able to stay in one location is part of what’s made him a neighborhood fixture — even beyond Oakland, parents from San Jose and Hayward know to bring their kids’ report cards to him.
On the day I visited, his place was instantly recognizable by the bikes stacked on the roof. When Paul saw me, he greeted me with a hug and began hauling bikes out of his home and propping them on the sidewalk. One after another, there they were: double-stacks, choppers, and, finally, the little black-and-gold frame of a child’s bike with its wheels in disrepair.
This bike, painted in Paul’s signature colors, is to be the prototype that introduces his bike program to schools in the area, starting with Prescott Elementary in Oakland. Paul's idea is to donate a tricked-out ride every report card season, which the school would prominently display. Every A on a student’s report card would be an entry into a raffle to win the bike. If schools take to it, his goal is to work with as many as he can.
Tall Paul started tinkering with bikes when he was just a child himself — as he remembers it, he was five years old. His mother had saved up to buy him and his six brothers and five sisters bikes for Christmas. While everyone else was out riding theirs, Paul took his down to the basement and dismantled it. “I wanted to see what made it work,” he said.
The passion for taking bikes apart and putting them back together hasn’t left him. “I like everything about it,” he said. “It’s an art.” One of his passions is sanding down the metal of a rusty bike and erasing the ravages of time until the frame gleams. “You see, when you sand it, you take your hand, and you feel the bike. You don’t want to feel a scratch; you don’t want to feel a nick; you don’t want to feel nothing. Like a baby’s butt — smooth.” When he’s finished, he puts it all back together and makes sure it runs well, then carefully paints each piece down to the spokes in the white-walled wheels, then buffs everything to a lustrous shine. For his own bikes, his finishing touch is a rhinestone “TP” (for “Tall Paul") affixed between the handlebars. He also plans to add gears to his double-stacks.
A few pigeons milled about on the sidewalk where Paul was working. He said the birds know him, just like the rest of the neighborhood does. “They recognize me,” he said. “I could ride my bike right to the corner and stop, and birds will fly down from everywhere and come to it.” He took a break to coax them near. That day there were maybe a dozen, but he explained that on Sunday there’s inevitably a flock around him.
Crouching among the birds, he told me he also dreams of opening a shop so that he can scale his operation. Although the bikes he hasn’t started restoring yet can rest atop his mobile home, he has to take all of his finished and in-progress bikes inside when he’s not working on them. Plus, he has several bikes of his own. This means he usually accepts only two bikes at a time from children and tells others to come back in two days. With a shop, he’d have space to store bikes and tools, as well as a location for business. “I’d love to get this program into every school in the world for all the kids,” he said, referring to his bike raffle. But he’s taking it one step at a time.
For now, he’s on the lookout for any bike that people have given up on and are selling for scrap metal, which he can buy for a few dollars. “I get whole bicycles that probably come off a bush or somewhere. They have all these leaves in them and chains so rusted, you can’t even turn them. But I bring them back to life.”

Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, California, United States.[2] Often referred to as "The Rock", the small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963.[5] Beginning in November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of aboriginal people from San Francisco who were part of a wave of Native activism across the nation with public protests through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

James Oscar Smith aka Jimmy Smith photos by Jon Hammond
Taken in Long Beach, California
Long Beach CA -- James Oscar Smith aka Jimmy Smith photos by Jon Hammond one month before he passed away, just after receiving the prestigious NEA Jazz Master Award.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Smith_(musician)
James Oscar "Jimmy" Smith (December 8, 1925[1] or 1928[2] – February 8, 2005)[1][2] was an American jazz musician who achieved the rare distinction of releasing a series of instrumental jazz albums that often charted on Billboard. Smith helped popularize the Hammond B-3 electric organ, creating an indelible link between sixties soul and jazz improvisation.

In 2005, Smith was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest honor that the United States bestows upon jazz musicians.
Also known as The Incredible Jimmy Smith
Born December 8, 1925
Norristown, Pennsylvania, United States
Died February 8, 2005 (aged 79)
Scottsdale, Arizona, United States
Genres Hard bop
Mainstream jazz
Jazz-funk
Jazz fusion
Occupation(s) Musician
Instruments Hammond B-3 electric organ

Smith's birth year is of some confusion, with various sources citing either 1925 or 1928. Born James Oscar Smith in Norristown, Pennsylvania, at the age of six he joined his father doing a song-and-dance routine in clubs. He began teaching himself to play the piano. When he was nine, Smith won a Philadelphia radio talent contest as a boogie-woogie pianist.[5] After a stint in the navy, he began furthering his musical education in 1948, with a year at Royal Hamilton College of Music, then the Leo Ornstein School of Music in Philadelphia in 1949. He began exploring the Hammond organ in 1951. From 1951 to 1954 he played piano, then organ in Philly R&B bands like Don Gardner and the Sonotones. He switched to organ permanently in 1954 after hearing Wild Bill Davis.
He purchased his first Hammond organ, rented a warehouse to practice in and emerged after little more than a year. Upon hearing him playing in a Philadelphia club, Blue Note's Alfred Lion immediately signed him to the label and his second album, The Champ, quickly established Smith as a new star on the jazz scene. He was a prolific recording artist and, as a leader, dubbed The Incredible Jimmy Smith, he recorded around forty sessions for Blue Note in just eight years beginning in 1956. Albums from this period include The Sermon!, House Party, Home Cookin', Midnight Special, Back at the Chicken Shack and Prayer Meetin'.

Smith signed to the Verve label in 1962. His first album, Bashin', sold well and for the first time set Smith with a big band, led by Oliver Nelson. Further big band collaborations followed, most successfully with Lalo Schifrin for The Cat and guitarist Wes Montgomery, with whom he recorded two albums: The Dynamic Duo and Further Adventures Of Jimmy and Wes. Other notable albums from this period include Blue Bash and Organ Grinder Swing with Kenny Burrell, The Boss with George Benson, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Got My Mojo Working, and Root Down.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Smith recorded with some of the great jazz musicians of the day such as Kenny Burrell, George Benson, Grant Green, Stanley Turrentine, Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks, Jackie McLean, Grady Tate and Donald Bailey.

The Jimmy Smith Trio performed "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and "The Sermon" in the 1964 film Get Yourself a College Girl.

In the 1970s, Smith opened his own supper club in Los Angeles, California, and played there regularly with guitarist Paul C Saenz, Kenny Dixon on drums, Herman Riley and John F. Phillips on saxophone; also included in the band was harmonica/flute player Stanley Behrens. The 1972 album Root Down, considered a seminal influence on later generations of funk and hip-hop musicians, was recorded live at the club, albeit with a different group of backing musicians...

Paul Kantner - time for some morning coffee, SF Chronicle and smoke some cigs in North Beach San Francisco - Jon Hammond
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kantner
Paul Lorin Kantner (born March 17, 1941) is an American rock musician, known for co-founding the psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane and its spin-off band Jefferson Starship. He was born in San Francisco, California.

*Coffee Time at Caffé Trieste:

Although the band was originally formed by Marty Balin, Kantner eventually became the main man of Jefferson Airplane and captained the group through various successor incarnations of Jefferson Starship. Kantner has the longest continuous membership with the band; at times he was the only founding member still in the band from the original Jefferson Airplane line up.[1] A political anarchist, Kantner once advocated the use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD for mind expansion and spiritual growth, and is a prominent advocate of the legalization of marijuana.[2][3] In a 1986 interview, Kantner shared his thoughts about cocaine and alcohol, saying, "Cocaine, particularly, is a bummer. It's a noxious drug that turns people into jerks. And alcohol is probably the worst drug of all. As you get older and accomplish more things in life in general, you realize that drugs don't help, particularly if you abuse them."[4] When Kantner suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in 1980, his attending physician at Cedars-Sinai, Stephen Levy, was quick to point out it was not a drug-related issue, saying: "There is zero relationship between Paul's illness and drugs. He doesn't use drugs."[5] Kantner's primary instrument is the rhythm guitar, and he also sings lead or backup vocals. Kantner has three children, sons Gareth and Alexander, and daughter China.[6]

Early years[edit]
The son of Paul and Cora Lee (Fortier) Kantner, Paul had two much older half-siblings: a half-brother and a half-sister. His mother died when he was eight years old, and Kantner remembers not being able to attend her funeral, having been sent to the circus instead.[1] His father, a traveling salesman, sent young Kantner off to Jesuit military school after his mother's death. It was in the school's library at age eight or nine where he read his first science fiction book, finding an escape by immersing himself in science fiction novels and music at an early age.[1][2][7] When he became a teenager he went into total revolt against all forms of authority, and became determined to become a protest folk singer in the manner of his musical hero, Pete Seeger.[7] He entered University of Santa Clara and San Jose State College, completing a total of three years before he dropped out to enter the music scene.[1]

1960s–1970s[edit]

During the summer of 1965 singer Marty Balin saw Kantner perform at the Drinking Gourd, a San Francisco folk club, and recruited him as part of the original Jefferson Airplane.[1][2][8] When the group needed a guitarist, Kantner recommended Jorma Kaukonen, whom he knew from his San Jose days.[1] Kantner would be the only member to appear on all Jefferson Airplane/Starship albums bearing the Jefferson prefix. Kantner's songwriting often featured whimsical or political lyrics with a science-fiction or fantasy theme, usually set to music that had a hard rock, almost martial sound. Kantner and Jefferson Airplane were among those who played at Woodstock. Forty years later, Kantner recalled: “We were due to be on stage at 10pm on the Saturday night but we didn’t actually get on until 7.30am the following day.”[9] Later in the year, the group also played at Altamont, where Marty Balin was knocked unconscious by a Hell's Angel member originally hired as security for the concert.[10]

Despite its commercial success, the Airplane was plagued by intra-group fighting, causing the band to begin splintering at the height of its success.[11] Part of the problem was manager Bill Graham, who wanted the group to do more touring and more recording.[12][13] During the transitional period of the early 1970s, as the Airplane started to disintegrate, Kantner recorded Blows Against The Empire, a concept album featuring an ad-hoc group of musicians whom he dubbed Jefferson Starship.[7][11][14][15] This earliest edition of Jefferson Starship included members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (David Crosby and Graham Nash) and members of the Grateful Dead (Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart), as well as some of the other members of Jefferson Airplane (Grace Slick, Joey Covington, and Jack Casady).

In Blows Against the Empire, Kantner (and Slick) sang about a group of people escaping earth in a hijacked starship. The album was nominated in 1971 for the science fiction Hugo Award.[16] A sequel, The Empire Blows Back, was released in 1983 and included most of the same musicians, performing this time under the name The Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra.[17]

Kanter had been in love with Grace Slick for some time, but she was involved in a relationship with the band's drummer, Spencer Dryden. After their two-year affair ended, he finally had a chance with Grace.[1][13][18] In 1969, Kantner and Grace Slick began living together publicly as a couple. Rolling Stone magazine called them "the psychedelic John and Yoko." Slick became pregnant, and a song about their love child's impending birth "A Child Is Coming" appeared on Blows Against the Empire. Kantner and Slick's daughter China Kantner was born in 1971.[19][20][21] Slick would later leave Kantner to marry Skip Johnson, a Jefferson Starship roadie.[2] Despite the split, Slick remained with the band.

Kantner and Slick released two follow-up albums. Sunfighter was an environmentalism-tinged album released in 1971 to celebrate China's birth. He and Grace made news again in 1972, when they were accused of assaulting a policeman after their Akron, Ohio concert.[22][23] 1973's Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun was titled after the nicknames David Crosby had given to the couple. Through a songwriter friend Kantner discovered teen-aged guitarist Craig Chaquico during this time, who first appeared on Sunfighter and would play with all of the incarnations of the Starship name through 1991.

After Kaukonen and Casady left the Airplane in 1973 to devote their full attention to Hot Tuna, the musicians on Baron von Tollbooth formed the core of a new Airplane lineup that was formally reborn as "Jefferson Starship" in 1974. Kantner, Slick, and David Freiberg were charter members along with late-Airplane holdovers drummer John Barbata, and fiddler Papa John Creach, along with Pete Sears (who, like Freiberg, played bass and keyboards), and Chaquico. Marty Balin also joined Jefferson Starship while their first album, Dragonfly, was still in the works, co-writing with Kantner the album's biggest hit "Caroline."[15][24]

After the 1978 release of the album Earth - to which Kantner contributed just one song - Jefferson Starship endured major personnel changes. Slick took a leave of absence, and Balin quit the group to pursue a solo career. No attempt was made to replace Slick, but Balin was replaced by Mickey Thomas, who was previously successful as a member of the Elvin Bishop Group.[25][26] An album dominated by Kantner compositions called Freedom at Point Zero was released to commercial success. Grace Slick returned for the follow-up album Modern Time which was another record featuring Kantner's science fiction themes.[2]

1980s–1990s[edit]
In October 1980, Kantner was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in serious condition from a cerebral hemorrhage.[7] Kantner had been working in Los Angeles on an album when he became ill.[27] He was 39 years old at the time and beat considerable odds with a full recovery without surgery.[28] A year later, Kantner talked about the experience, saying, "If there was a Big Guy up there willing to talk to me, I was willing to listen. But nothing happened. It was all just like a small vacation." It was his second brush with serious illness or injury, having suffered a serious motorcycle accident in the early 1960s: "I hit a tree at 40 miles an hour head first and nearly shattered my skull. I had a plate in there for a while."[2] The injury from the motorcycle accident was credited with saving Kantner from serious complications from the cerebral hemorrhage; the hole left by the accident relieved the accompanying cranial pressure.[1]

Kantner in concert with Jefferson Starship, 1996.
In 1984, Kantner (the last founding member of Jefferson Airplane remaining) left the group, complaining that the band had become too commercial and strayed too far from its counterculture roots.[29] Kantner made his decision to leave while Jefferson Starship was in the middle of a tour.[25] Upon quitting Kantner took legal action against his former bandmates over the Jefferson name (the rest of the band wanted to continue as Jefferson Starship).[30] Kantner won his suit, and the group name was reduced to simply "Starship."[12] Under the terms of the settlement, no group can call itself Jefferson Starship without Paul Kantner as a member, and no group can call itself Jefferson Airplane unless Grace Slick is on board.[31][32] The legal battle had personal repercussions as well, permanently damaging Kantner's friendships with Mickey Thomas and Craig Chiquico.[33] In a 2007 interview, Kantner related that the legal battles did not put an end to the name issue: "Right now she's (Grace Slick) suing me for some unknown reason, but generally we get along really well. Twenty years ago, feeling tired of the music business, she signed over her interest in Jefferson Starship to me, and now she's suing me for using the name. I actually had to go and dig up the piece of paper she signed, and I showed it to her, and she said, "I don't remember that.""[29][34] The legal issues came to an end in 2008, with Slick and former group manager Bill Thompson being declared the rightful owners of the name, but granting Kantner the right to use it for his band for a fee which was not disclosed.[35]

In 1985, following his departure from Jefferson Starship, Paul Kantner rejoined with Balin and Jack Casady to form the KBC Band, releasing their only album, KBC Band (which included Kantner's hit, "America"), in 1987 on Arista Records.[11][32] There was a video made for "America" as well as a national KBC tour.[36] In 1986, Kantner headed for court with Slick and her then husband, Skip Johnson, over the taping of some telephone conversations.[37]

With Kantner reunited with Balin and Casady, the KBC Band opened the door to a full-blown Jefferson Airplane reunion. In 1988, during a San Francisco Hot Tuna gig where Kantner was performing, they found themselves joined by Grace Slick. This led to a formal reunion of the original Jefferson Airplane (featuring nearly all the main members, including founder Marty Balin, but without Spencer Dryden, who left in 1970.[38][39] A self-titled album was released by Columbia Records. The accompanying tour was a success, but their revival was short-lived, although the band never formally disbanded.[40] According to Grace Slick, the reunion began as a joke: "We hadn't even talked for a year, and we were battling legally - in fact, there are still some standing lawsuits between me and Paul, something to do with the Airplane. Anyway, the idea was that I'd just sneak in, stand at the side of the stage and come out and sing 'White Rabbit' and see what Paul did. Paul never got the joke, but he liked it, the audience liked it, and that's how it started."[41]

1990s–present[edit]
Kantner and his Jefferson Airplane bandmates were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.[42] The performance at the induction ceremony was the first time original members Marty Balin, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Spencer Dryden and Kantner had played together since 1970.[43] Grace Slick had to miss the ceremonies because of a serious leg infection, but sent a message which was delivered by Kantner, "Grace sends her love."[44]

In 1991 Kantner and Balin reformed Jefferson Starship and Kantner continues to tour and record with the band as of 2013. Today Jefferson Starship is primarily a Paul Kantner solo band, with various former Airplane and Starship members dropping in for tours or specific shows. With their latest female vocalist Cathy Richardson and Kantner's son Alexander Kantner on bass, Jefferson Starship released their first studio album in a decade, titled Jefferson's Tree of Liberty in September 2008.[45] The album was a return to Kantner's musical roots featuring covers of 1950's and 1960s protest songs.[33][46]

In late 2010 Kantner started to compile collections of "sonic art" performed by him and various artists, including a mix of cover songs, sound effects, and spoken word, releasing multiple volumes under the title "Paul Kantner Windowpane Collective".[47]

Lou Colombo (* 22. August 1927 in Brockton, Massachusetts[1]; † 3.

Chris Cortez and Jon Hammond

This episode of HammondCast on KYOU 1550 AM Radio features some historic recordings of Jon Hammond with radio & tv legend AL "JAZZBEAUX" COLLINS, this will blow your socks off! Al does a complete recitation of his Hipster version of "Little Red Ridinghood" accompanied by Jon on the Hammond organ live. Also radio host CHRIS CORTEZ talking about how Jon and Jazzbeaux almost blew up the transmitter for the radio station by plugging the Hammond organ directly in as a late-night experiment on the Bay Area station...wooops! All worked out ok, but the Chief Engineer and Station Manager were a little bit upset the next day.
Going back even a few more years, Al Jazzbeaux breaks Jon's recording of "Sidewinder" on the now defunct but legendary and most powerful station of New York City-WNEW 1130 AM. For Al Jazzbeaux Collins freaks, this HammondCast episode is a MUST.

This is the Gretel & Alfons on the Große Freiheit 29, 22767 Hamburg where The Beatles hung out and drank beers back in the days when they were playing long nights at The Star Club just steps away. My friend Horst Jankowiak (R.I.P.) who was the owner told me that Paul McCartney returned there in 1989 and paid up their outstanding tab for beers leftover from 1961, and gave the house a pretty good tip as well. Very sad to hear that Horst has died, he had myself and Joe Berger sign in the house guest book on the next page over from where Jimi Hendrix had signed it - I met Lee Curtis there in Gretel & Alfons and Lee walked with me and showed me the place where Star Club had burnt down - Lee Curtis (from Liverpool) played The Star Club more than any other performer - quite a legacy there folks! Jon Hammond

http://www.noz.de/artikel/2232056/bei-gretel-alfons-stand-paul-mccartney-in-der-kreide

Bruno Koschmider zeigte ihn wegen Brandstiftung an.

Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show -- Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert.

Mal in Folge.

Bill Gates onstage for Windows 2000 presentation - the giant laptop actually had Carlos Santana Band inside - it opened up and voilá! Full stage setup, nice gig! - Jon Hammond
http://news.microsoft.com/2000/02/17/windows-2000-now-broadly-available/
"Copies of Windows 2000 are now available for business customers in more than 60 countries around the world.
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 17, 2000 — With a giant laptop computer providing the backdrop at the venerable Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates officially launched Windows 2000 today at the Windows 2000 Conference & Expo.

“Today we unveil the future of computing. Companies of all sizes are already deploying Windows 2000 for its scalability, reliability and performance,
“said Gates.”
Windows 2000 represents a significant industrywide effort. More than 1,000 partners, over $1 billion in engineering and more than 5,000 individuals rallied together to make this product the platform that companies can bet their businesses on. Windows 2000 truly begins the next generation of computing.”

The Microsoft co-founder was assisted by rock guitarist Carlos Santana, whose band began playing its hit single,
“Smooth,”
on stage after Gates concluded his keynote address, filled with Windows 2000 videos and demonstrations.

Windows 2000 is broadly available in more than 60 countries and 10 languages, including English, German, Japanese (two versions), French, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, Korean and Brazilian Portuguese.

Microsoft has invested more than $1 billion in the development of Windows 2000, and more than 5,000 employees worked on the new platform, Gates said.

Some 500 person-years were devoted to making Windows 2000 the most reliable operating system today for businesses and Web sites, meaning that 500 people worked full-time for an entire year on reliability enhancements, Gates continued..."

Paris France -- circa 1981 down in the Metro with a couple of nefarious characters, we are on our way to Radio Tomate - Jon Hammond
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Tomate

Félix Guattari, participates in the creation of Radio Tomate which aims at a " individual and collective reappropriation [...] interactive use of information machines, communications, intelligence, art and culture. "

The radio is run by activists, particularly from the autonomous movement. It aims to open new spaces for debate and policy information, and to fight against repression of social movements. The first Radio Tomate lasts only two years.

The project is then reactivated in 1988, still on the principle of giving voice to people in struggle. The antenna transmits on 106.7 MHz in Paris, and shares the frequency, and therefore airtime, with several other radios. Tomato radio hosts at the time five programs on issues of housing rights, precariousness, of double jeopardy, anti-prison struggles (free Parlor), and a punk show.

Lorsqu'émerge in 1991 the largest of a community radio project assuming a full frequency, the hosts of Radio Tomate decided to bring their energy on the creation of this new antenna. Tomato radio disappears in 1992 to give birth to Paris Plurielle frequency.

Wow look at these guys suspended out there in a basket doing the demolition job on the old San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge ghost bridge, amazing! - Jon Hammond

http://baybridgeinfo.org/demolition
Crews have begun to carefully dismantle the 77-year old East Span section-by-section, in roughly the reverse order of how it was built in the mid-1930s.

Demolition of the nearly 2-mile long original East Span will take place in three phases over three to five years. Crews will first work in the westward direction toward Yerba Buena Island, taking apart the cantilever section and demolishing the S-Curve, before moving east to dismantle the 504’ and the 288’ truss spans. The demolition team will then head to the waterline to remove the piers, pilings and foundations that support the span. When the entire demolition project is complete, over 58,000 tons of steel and 245,000 tons of concrete will have been removed.

PHASE ONE: SEPARATING AND DISMANTLING THE CANTILEVER TRUSS TO YERBA BUENA ISLAND
The first phase of the demolition process: Cut the cantilever section at its center and begin dismantling both sides.

This work is well underway, with a 800-foot gap in the middle of the cantilever span easily visible from the new East Span. The 576-foot-long middle (suspended) section of the cantilever has been completely removed.

Before the demolition team cut through the cantilever and separated its two halves, preparations were made to reduce structural tension and pull the suspended span on each end toward the rest of the bridge. Without these precautions, the two halves would have collapsed and fallen into the water below.

Crews have also begun to demolish the temporary bypass known as the S-Curve. This section of the original span along is being cleared first in order to allow contractors to complete the bicycle and pedestrian path and to construct the permanent eastbound on-ramp from Yerba Buena Island.

Marcos Tachikawa
