Kenny Burrell 2005 NEA Jazz Masters Award Recipient Film by Jon Hammond - Nancy Wilson presenting - http://arts.gov/honors/jazz/kenny-burrell Guitarist, Composer, Educator
2005 NEA Jazz Master

Born on July 31, 1931 in Detroit, MI - "Receiving this prestigious award from the National Endowment for the Arts is one of the high points of my career. I am delighted and honored to have been considered among the great musicians both past and present who have been given this recognition. I am most grateful to all concerned. Thank you." - Kenny Burrell - Verve Records - http://www.HammondCast.com/

"Kenny Burrell pioneered the guitar-led trio with bass and drums in the late 1950s. Known for his harmonic creativity, lush tones, and lyricism on the guitar, he is also a prolific and highly regarded composer. Born in Detroit in 1931, he found musical colleagues at an early age among Paul Chambers, Tommy Flanagan, Frank Foster, Yusef Lateef, and the brothers Thad, Hank, and Elvin Jones. While still a student at Wayne State University, he made his first major recording in 1951 with Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Percy Heath, and Milt Jackson.

After graduation, he toured for six months with the Oscar Peterson Trio and then moved to New York, where he performed in Broadway pit bands, on pop and R&B studio sessions (with Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, and James Brown), in jazz venues, and on jazz recordings. He went on to work and/or record with such artists as Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Stan Getz, Gene Ammons, Kenny Dorham, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, and Jimmy Smith. As a leader, he has recorded more than 90 albums and is a featured guitarist on more than 200 jazz recordings, including ones with Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, and Quincy Jones.

Burrell's compositions have been recorded by artists including Ray Brown, June Christy, Grover Washington, Jr., Frank Wess, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. His extended composition for the Boys Choir of Harlem was premiered at New York's Lincoln Center, and his "Dear Ella," performed by Dee Dee Bridgewater, won a 1998 Grammy Award.

In addition to performing and recording, he is a professor of music and ethnomusicology at the University of California at Los Angeles. A recognized authority on the music of Duke Ellington, he developed the first regular college course ever taught in the United States on Ellington in 1978. In 1997, he was appointed director of the jazz studies program at UCLA, where he has enlisted such faculty members as George Bohanon, Billy Childs, Billy Higgins, Harold Land, Bobby Rodriguez, and Gerald Wilson.

Burrell is the author of two books, Jazz Guitar and Jazz Guitar Solos. In 2004, he received a Jazz Educator of the Year Award from DownBeat. He is a founder of the Jazz Heritage Foundation and the Friends of Jazz at UCLA and is recognized as an international ambassador for jazz and its promotion as an art form.

MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show -- Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert.

Mal in Folge.

-- Interview: Detlef Kinsler

Jazz Clarinetist Dick Johnson Dies at 84
Boston-based player fronted Artie Shaw band for over 20 years
By Lee Mergner
Dick Johnson, perhaps best known for his long stint as frontman for the Artie Shaw Orchestra, died in the Boston area on Sunday, January 10. Johnson died at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston after a brief illness, according to the Conley Funeral Home. He was 84 years old.
Johnson was born December 1, 1925 and grew up in the Brockton, Mass area as part of a musical family. He got his professional start as a musician during a stint with the U.S. Navy in 1944-1946. Johnson served with the navy band on the USS Pasadena during WWII. He often credited his stint in the Navy for kicking off his career in jazz.
After the war, Johnson toured with the big bands of Charlie Spivak and Buddy Morrow. Eventually, after several years on the road, he settled in his hometown of Brockton, Mass. It was there in Brockton where he and close friend, Lou Colombo formed a jazz sextet. The group lasted 10 years, but the friendship and musical kinship lasted for the rest of his life. In addition, Johnson formed his septet—Swing Shift—which was a staple on the Boston music scene for many years. Like Herb Pomeroy, Johnson managed a double career as a perfomer and an educator, teaching jazz at nearby Berklee, where he mentored many younger jazz musicians.
According to the notes on Johnson’s album Artie’s Choice, in 1980, Artie Shaw sent a message to Dick Johnson's manager, and said: "You wanted to hear what I think of Dick Johnson's clarinet playing. Okay. At this time, he's the best I've ever heard. Bar nobody. And you can quote me on that, anywhere, anytime!"
Shortly thereafter in 1983 he joined the Artie Shaw Orchestra as its frontman, with Shaw himself retired at least as a clarinetist. Shaw continued to appear with the group and let Johnson act as his surrogate for the next 20 years. Idiosyncratic until the end, Shaw permitted few recordings by the group, but Johnson’s reputation as a clarinetist grew from its live performances. The group disbanded in 2006 a few years shortly after Shaw’s death.
Over the years Johnson performed with Dave McKenna, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Buddy Rich. He recorded as a both a leader and a sideman on the Mercury, Emarcy, Riverside, and Concord Jazz labels. His latest CD was Star Dust and Beyond: A Tribute to Artie Shaw for the Crazy Scott label in 2006.
Johnson was an important part of the local Boston jazz and music community. In 1999, Brockton declared May 1 to be “Dick Johnson Day.” Johnson spent the day meeting students and later performed with school band members at Brockton High.
Johnson is survived by family members including his wife of 59 years, Rose Johnson of Brockton, his son, Gary Johnson, and his daughter, Pamela Sargent, wife of noted jazz guitarist Gray Sargent.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St., Brockton. A remembrance service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
"I had the pleasure of seeing Dick many times over the past 38 years,
> including his appearances with Dave McKenna at the Columns in West Dennis on
> Cape Cod in 1971, and on several occasions with the little big band known as
> Dick Johnson's Swing Shift. Dick co-led a great quintet with Herb Pomeroy
> that featured Alan Dawson at the Eden Gardens in Worcester in 1975. The
> last concert I saw him play was with Jack Senier's All-Stars on a Sunday
> afternoon in June 2007 at the 1794 Meetinghouse in New Salem, Mass, a
> stone's throw from the Quabbin Reservoir. Dick played alto for the better
> part of the afternoon, but most memorable was his performance on clarinet of
> "Memories of You." He was 81 by then, but as charismatic as ever.
>
> On a winter's night a year or two earlier, my wife Meg and I saw Dick with
> trumpeter Lou Colombo in the tiny cocktail lounge adjacent to the foyer of
> an inn in Chatham, Mass. There again he was playing alto, but I noticed his
> clarinet by his side and requested he play it. To an SRO crowd of about
> eight people, Dick treated us to "After You've Gone," the tempo increasing
> on each successive chorus till one could almost hear Artie Shaw and BG and
> Bird stirring in approval. Truly unforgettable.
> Dick was at the 2005 IAJE convention in Long Beach to accept the NEA Jazz
> Masters Award in honor of Artie Shaw, who'd died a couple of weeks earlier.
> In his telltale Brockton accent, he spoke of Shaw's inspiring and exacting
> musical standards. Dick later played a solo clarinet piece at Artie's
> memorial service, and dropped me a note afterwards in which he wrote, "It
> was by far the biggest honor I've ever received to play solo clarinet for
> the man who'd been a hero of mine since I was 14 years old. I flew back
> home sad and jubilant at the same time."
>
> Somehow it seems appropriate that the last time I saw Dick was at Dave
> McKenna's memorial service in Woonsocket, R.I. thirteen months ago. Alas,
> Dick Johnson has passed on too. Dick leaves his son Gary, a fine drummer
> who shared the bandstand with his father for many years, and his son-in-law
> Gray Sargent, the guitarist who's been touring with Tony Bennett for a
> decade and who recorded a beautiful duo concert with Dave McKenna at Maybeck
> Recital Hall for Concord Jazz in 1995." — at National Endowment for the Arts.

Jon Hammond visit with his piano teacher Tony Germain:
"So good to see my piano teacher main man Tony Germain 40 years later from the first day we met on Scheduling Day 1973, looking good Tony! Greatest piano and Hammond organ teacher folks!

Tony taught so many players well and created the organ department (long story!) Chairing the PIano Department, (he has a nice chair in his office and superb Steinway Grand Piano) - if you are lucky enough to be a student at Berklee and get to study with Tony Germain, then you are living under the lucky star - Tony is the Man!! Thanks for everything you showed me Tony, straightened me out big time" - Jon Hammond
*Return of the Student -

Here I am with my Piano Teacher main man Tony Germain 40 years to the day later from the first time we sat down together folks - interview coming soon, many thanks Tony! Jon Hammond
http://www.berklee.edu/people/tony-germain
Position: Assistant Chair
Department: Piano

Tony's Steinway Grand Piano

"I think I might have been one of Berklee's first graduates with what today is called the performance major in piano. So as assistant chair, I have a vested interest in making sure we're still preparing piano, keyboard, and organ students, without being in any way style prejudiced. I also took the position to have a little bit more involvement with the curriculum—to see what I could personally add or help create."

"When I went to Berklee, Ted Pease, Phil Wilson, and Mike Rendish were my role models and my teachers. They set the standard for what I'd become and how I would teach. They were all very good to me, and I could see how much they loved it. Here at Berklee, I'm giving back to something that has given me everything. I often describe Berklee as a musical Fantasy Island. I just don't know where else I'd be happy."

"Prior to becoming assistant chair of the Piano Department, I taught pretty much everything across the board for 33 years: harmony, ear training, arranging, ensembles. I created the Harmonic Ear Training course and taught it from about 1978 until I became assistant chair. I'm equally in love with private and classroom teaching, and have done it all my adult life. I probably get more out of it than my students do. But hopefully I inspire students to further their interests in whichever style of performance they desire—it's my job to prepare them for the long haul. I still teach Survey of Piano Styles: History of Jazz Piano. I didn't want to give it up. And I didn't want to not teach entirely, because you lose touch if you're out of the classroom."

The late great Jim LeRoy!
In Memory of my friend Jim LeRoy - video & music by  Jon Hammond at OAK Airport September 26, 2002 - http://www.HammondCast.com/ - Jim's Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_LeRoy
Jim LeRoy (April 5, 1961 – July 28, 2007) was an American aerobatics pilot. A former US Marine Corps Scout/Sniper, he held a B.S. degree in Aeronautical/Aerospace engineering as well as an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license.
Initially flying solo performances, he gained a reputation with his highly energetic aerobatic displays. In 2003, LeRoy joined a daring and successful airshow troupe, the X-team, who referred to themselves as the Masters of Disaster. Their performance generally consisted of three pilots flying a simultaneous, chaotic, interweaving aerobatic display through clouds of smoke generated by circling jet-powered trucks below. After two seasons of successful airshows, an accident occurred on July 10, 2005 during a routine performance when Jimmy Franklin and Bobby Younkin collided in mid-air. Jim LeRoy was not involved in the collision and landed safely.
LeRoy was one of only eleven pilots ever to be awarded both the Art Scholl Showmanship Award (2002) and the Bill Barber Award for Showmanship (2003). He was also one of only a handful of full-time air show pilots in the world who actually made his living by performing for air show audiences.
LeRoy also held the following pilot ratings: single-engine, multi-engine, airplane instructor, helicopter, helicopter instructor, instrument instructor and aerobatic competency evaluator.
Death[edit]
Wikinews has related news: Deadly crash at Dayton, Ohio air show
Around 2:15PM EST at the Vectren Dayton Air Show at the Dayton International Airport, LeRoy crashed his S2S Bulldog II, while in performance with the X-Team Codename: Mary's Lamb aerobatics team.[1] Initial indications show that he was performing a 1/2 Cuban 8 and snap rolls on the 45 degree down line,[2] but recovered too low to the ground to pull out. He hit the runway at 200 mph (although his vertical speed was only around 75 mph); the plane slid and burst into flames.[3] LeRoy was pronounced dead in a military MEDEVAC helicopter while in transit to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. The coroner's report states that LeRoy died on impact due to a fracture of his neck, but that he also was badly burnt.[3] The National Transportation Safety Board ruled that the probable cause of the crash was the pilot's failure to maintain clearance from terrain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Smith_(musician)
James Oscar "Jimmy" Smith (December 8, 1925[1] or 1928[2] – February 8, 2005)[1][2] was an American jazz musician who achieved the rare distinction of releasing a series of instrumental jazz albums that often charted on Billboard. Smith helped popularize the Hammond B-3 electric organ, creating an indelible link between sixties soul and jazz improvisation.

In 2005, Smith was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest honor that the United States bestows upon jazz musicians.
Also known as The Incredible Jimmy Smith
Born December 8, 1925
Norristown, Pennsylvania, United States
Died February 8, 2005 (aged 79)
Scottsdale, Arizona, United States
Genres Hard bop
Mainstream jazz
Jazz-funk
Jazz fusion
Occupation(s) Musician
Instruments Hammond B-3 electric organ

Smith's birth year is of some confusion, with various sources citing either 1925 or 1928. Born James Oscar Smith in Norristown, Pennsylvania, at the age of six he joined his father doing a song-and-dance routine in clubs. He began teaching himself to play the piano. When he was nine, Smith won a Philadelphia radio talent contest as a boogie-woogie pianist.[5] After a stint in the navy, he began furthering his musical education in 1948, with a year at Royal Hamilton College of Music, then the Leo Ornstein School of Music in Philadelphia in 1949. He began exploring the Hammond organ in 1951. From 1951 to 1954 he played piano, then organ in Philly R&B bands like Don Gardner and the Sonotones. He switched to organ permanently in 1954 after hearing Wild Bill Davis.
He purchased his first Hammond organ, rented a warehouse to practice in and emerged after little more than a year. Upon hearing him playing in a Philadelphia club, Blue Note's Alfred Lion immediately signed him to the label and his second album, The Champ, quickly established Smith as a new star on the jazz scene. He was a prolific recording artist and, as a leader, dubbed The Incredible Jimmy Smith, he recorded around forty sessions for Blue Note in just eight years beginning in 1956. Albums from this period include The Sermon!, House Party, Home Cookin', Midnight Special, Back at the Chicken Shack and Prayer Meetin'.

Smith signed to the Verve label in 1962. His first album, Bashin', sold well and for the first time set Smith with a big band, led by Oliver Nelson. Further big band collaborations followed, most successfully with Lalo Schifrin for The Cat and guitarist Wes Montgomery, with whom he recorded two albums: The Dynamic Duo and Further Adventures Of Jimmy and Wes. Other notable albums from this period include Blue Bash and Organ Grinder Swing with Kenny Burrell, The Boss with George Benson, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Got My Mojo Working, and Root Down.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Smith recorded with some of the great jazz musicians of the day such as Kenny Burrell, George Benson, Grant Green, Stanley Turrentine, Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks, Jackie McLean, Grady Tate and Donald Bailey.

The Jimmy Smith Trio performed "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and "The Sermon" in the 1964 film Get Yourself a College Girl.

In the 1970s, Smith opened his own supper club in Los Angeles, California, and played there regularly with guitarist Paul C Saenz, Kenny Dixon on drums, Herman Riley and John F. Phillips on saxophone; also included in the band was harmonica/flute player Stanley Behrens. The 1972 album Root Down, considered a seminal influence on later generations of funk and hip-hop musicians, was recorded live at the club, albeit with a different group of backing musicians...

MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show -- Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert.

Mal in Folge.

-- Interview: Detlef Kinsler

*note from Jon: When
I got back to San Francisco I felt compelled to drive over to Robin's
house and pay my respects: Robin Williams' Sea Cliff San Francisco home -
farewell my old neighbor. My girlfriend and I met him one rainy night
just about here from where I took
this photo. He was sitting in his Volvo SUV wagon with bike rack on the
back. When we walked by the driver door with umbrella suddenly the door
popped open and out jumped Robin - he said "Hey Kids! Be careful when
you walk around here at night, the cars come around the corner fast!" He
was still wearing the fatigues from his USO Tour - we talked for a long
time standing in the rain there near China Beach and then he said good
night and walked across the street and went in his house. RIP Robin

Lenny Williams http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_Williams

Leonard Charles "Lenny" Williams (born February 16, 1945)[1] is an American singer known for his work in the R&B and soul music genres. During the 1970s, he was the lead vocalist for Tower of Power. As a soloist, he made several hit recordings, including 1977's "Choosing You" and 1978's "Cause I Love You".
Williams was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and later moved to Oakland, California, at a young age. Learning to play the trumpet in elementary school fueled his interest in music; his skills as a vocalist were first nurtured by singing in gospel choirs and groups around the Bay Area. He worked with several notable artists, such as Sly Stone, Andraé Crouch, Billy Preston and members of the Hawkins family, Edwin, Walter and Tramaine.
After winning several local talent contests, Williams signed his first recording contract with Fantasy Records. He cut two singles for the label, including "Lisa’s Gone" and "Feelin Blue", written by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 1972, Williams joined the emerging funk band Tower of Power. A string of hits followed, including "So Very Hard To Go", "Don't Change Horses (In The Middle Of The Stream)" and "Luvin You", written by Williams and Johnny "Guitar" Watson. During his two years with the group, Williams participated in three albums: Back To Oakland, Urban Renewal and the gold LP Tower Of Power. Williams and Tower of Power toured throughout the United States, Europe and Asia...

The City Attorney of Oakland read an official Proclamation declaring November 29th 2014 "The Whispers Day" City of Oakland CA

The Whispers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Whispers

The Whispers is a group from Los Angeles, California, with a consistent track record of hit records dating back to the late 1960s. The Whispers were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003,[1] and were winners of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's prestigious Pioneer Award in 2008.[2] By popular vote, the group was inducted into The SoulMusic Hall Of Fame at SoulMusic.com in December 2012.

"It's a Love Thing" aka "It's a Love Thang"

The Whispers formed in 1964 in Watts, California. The original members included twin brothers, Wallace "Scotty" and Walter Scott, along with Gordy Harmon, Marcus Hutson and Nicholas Caldwell. After Harmon injured his larynx in a driving accident in 1973, he was replaced by former Friends of Distinction member Leaveil Degree. Scotty Scott's fluid, melodic voice is featured on virtually all of their hits.

The group scored many hits on the R&B and Billboard Hot 100 charts throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and they hit #1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1980 with "And the Beat Goes On / "Can You Do the Boogie" / "Out the Box". In 1987, they enjoyed a brief tenure in the Top 40 when "Rock Steady" became their first Top 10 success on the Hot 100, reaching #7, while also capturing the #1 spot on the R&B chart.

After a series of singles on Los Angeles label, Dore, the group signed to a small LA label, Soul Clock, run by producer Ron Carson, who was responsible for their breakthrough hit, "Seems Like I Got To Do Wrong" in 1970. Moving to the larger New York-based Janus label, they continued to be produced by Carson, before he sold all of his recordings to Janus with the group then recording mainly in Philadelphia in the mid '70s. Since that period, most of their studio work has been done in Los Angeles. Their most successful period was in the 1980s with SOLAR Records (Sound Of Los Angeles Records), which was operated by their manager at the time, Dick Griffey. The Whispers later established their own production company, Satin Tie Productions, through which they released their independent 2006 album "For Your Ears Only."

The group opened Game 2 of the 1989 World Series at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum with their rendition of the National Anthem.

Marcus Hutson left the group in 1992 due to prostate cancer. According to the Whispers' website, when Hutson died of it in 2000, they vowed to never replace him, and now perform as a quartet.

Jerry McNeil resigned his position as keyboardist in the latter part of 1993 in order to spend more time with his family. In 2014 The Whispers was inducted into The Official R&B Music Hall of Fame.

The Philadelphia soul songwriter team Allan Felder, Norman Harris, Bunny Sigler, and Ronnie Baker provided several of The Whispers' songs including "A Mother for My Children" and "Bingo".
