Fixer Upper - Needs a little bit of work...also some trains (and the train tracks restored that were sadly ripped out) - 16th Street Train Station - West Oakland 16th and Wood St. - Jon Hammond

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16th_Street_Station_(Oakland)
*I used used to take the Key Route trains through this Art Deco train station folks - JH
The 16th Street Station is one of three original train stations that served Oakland, California at the start of the 20th century. The building was designed by architect Jarvis Hunt who was a preeminent train station architect at that time and the facility opened in 1912. For many decades, the 16th Street Station was a major railroad station of the Southern Pacific railroad in Oakland as well as local commuter services such as the East Bay Electric Lines via elevated platforms. It was a companion (or "city station") for the Oakland Terminal, which was located two miles away on the Oakland Pier. The Terminal, also known as the "Mole", was demolished in 1960, leaving the 16th Street Station as the major Oakland rail hub. It suffered significant damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and was closed. Its railroad function has since been replaced by the major Amtrak station in nearby Emeryville. Amtrak service ended on August 5, 1994.[1]
The station is located in West Oakland at 16th and Wood Streets, adjacent to and visible from the Interstate 880 connector ramps of the MacArthur Maze. The station buildings remain, largely intact, including the switchman's tower and ironwork elevated platforms which, before the completion of the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge, were utilized by commuter trains of SP's East Bay Electric Lines.
The station was purchased in 2005 by BUILD, an affiliate of BRIDGE Housing. It is being restored as part of a local redevelopment project[2][3] and will not be used as a railroad station again. The tracks of the Southern Pacific (now Union Pacific) main line were moved westward in the 1990s and today run on the other side of I-880, leaving the station isolated.
The station was used in films such as Funny Lady and Hemingway & Gellhorn.
The original 16th Street depot was a smaller wood structure, built at a time when the site was on the shoreline of San Francisco Bay. In the intervening years, the shoreline was filled in and now lies nearly a mile west.

Until the Bay Bridge railway began operation, Key commuter trains had no letter designation. They were named for the principal street or district they served.

Good Citizen - Hard Work, headed to Bottle Recycling Center - Jon Hammond

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recycling
Recycling is processing used materials (waste) into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to plastic production.[1][2] Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy.
There are some ISO standards relating to recycling such as ISO 15270:2008 for plastics waste and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management control of recycling practice.
Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles, and electronics. Although similar in effect, the composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste – such as food or garden waste – is not typically considered recycling.[2] Materials to be recycled are either brought to a collection center or picked up from the curbside, then sorted, cleaned, and reprocessed into new materials bound for manufacturing.

OAKLAND — Ronnie Stewart bent down along the sidewalk beneath West Oakland's regional transit station and gingerly slid a prototype plaque into place. After more than two decades of cajoling, his Walk of Fame was finally taking shape.

A trail of granite markers adorned with musical notes and this city's signature oak tree soon will decorate 7th Street, bearing the names of 84 rhythm-and-blues greats who in the 1940s turned this now mostly barren corridor into a "Harlem of the West."

This particular XB-2 Hammond organ has gone around the world with me more times than I remember - played Heinekin Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, at least 5 or 6 Frankfurt Musikmesse's, Radio Melody Austria, NDR Radio Hamburg, Radio France Inter, Music China Shanghai, on cruise ships, AFN Radio, Prague Czech Republic even Louisville Kentucky!

- then came my XK-3, XK-1 and now touring with Sk1 - next stop: Atlanta, Jon Hammond

Serial number plate from my precious early model XB-2 old friend never let me down in my international travels - the later XB-2's had a completely different number plate underneath the organ - this one was one of the first pieces when it was introduced by my good friends at Suzuki Musical Instruments in year 1991 - special thanks to my hero - Hiromitsu Ono! Jon Hammond incredible job of designing - even The Rolling Stones used an XB-2!

Run by Mike Mikell and Pat Mikell, from 1969 to 1991 it was a regular venue for New York's top studio and session musicians who would turn up for jam sessions with major soul, funk and jazz artists visiting the city.[1]
Among the performers and bands associated with Mikell’s are Stuff, the alliance of studio musicians that played almost weekly at Mikell's in the 1970s.
In early 1980, the club served for rehearsals for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band, which included Wynton Marsalis, and which would result in the live album Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band - Live at Montreux and North Sea (1980).[2] Other artists appearing at the club in the 1980s included Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, Cedar Walton and Mickey Roker (June 1983[3]), Paquito D'Rivera (January 1984[4]).

At Whole Foods concerts, locals recall jazz roots
Whole Foods Market, located at 97th Street and Columbus Avenue, is partnering with the Jazz Foundation of America to bring weekly concerts to the store.
By Sonalee Rau
Published September 30, 2010
This fall, the best place to find free jazz will be your local Whole Foods.

Whole Foods Market, located at 97th Street and Columbus Avenue, is partnering with the Jazz Foundation of America to bring weekly concerts to the store, as part of the foundation’s Jazz Legend Fall Series. Every Friday through Oct. 29, from 5:00 to 7:00, organizers hope to transform the supermarket into a music hall.

This particular Whole Foods has roots in the blues—it stands around the same site that neighborhood mainstay Mikell’s Jazz Club did between 1969 and 1991.

“We really wanted to connect historically with the long-term residents in the community, as well as with the new residents who would be moving in,” said Whole Foods Marketing Team Leader Kimberly Robison, who is coordinating the Jazz Legend Series.

Many of the musicians featured in the 10-week series once played at Mikell’s Jazz Club. “Whitney Houston was discovered there, Wynton Marsalis. … Various great musicians performed at that location,” Robison said. “One of my friends, he had moved away to Chicago and when he came back, Mikell’s was closed—and he started crying because it meant that much to him in his personal life. It was a community place and such a historic club.”

Last Friday’s concert featured saxophonist Eric Wyatt as part of a quartet that included bass, drums, and piano. The musicians played in the store’s cafeteria, and the event had a strong neighborhood turnout.

“We’ve had a great turnout and a warm reception, and this has become a way in which to tell the story of the neighborhood,” she said.

The Jazz Foundation of America has played a major role in the sponsorship of the series and provides support to jazz musicians—particularly aging artists, according to Robison.

More than just an escape from the produce aisle, patrons said the concerts serve as something of an oasis in a neighborhood that has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Smaller family-owned establishments have made way for the large stores that occupy the Columbus Square area today.

Upper West Side resident Lynn Hilaire remembered Mikell’s fondly as a popular destination for jazz aficionados. “It was a great spot, they had great jazz, they really had great people there. And it’s sort of legendary in the neighborhood.”

Hilaire said that the development of this neighborhood has its positive and negative aspects. While she enjoys having easy access to shopping, it has come at a price. “I had a view of Central Park for 37 years. Now I have [a view of] the people who live in the building in front of my living room window,” she said.

Other Whole Foods customers agreed that the face of the neighborhood has undergone remarkable change over the years. “It was a tennis court over there! Back in the seventies,” said concert-goer Barbara Johnson, gesturing to a space across the street from the grocery store.

“Some days it looks like 34th Street,” added local resident Dolores Zecca.

Sabella Curry, a regular at the Friday evening events who said she’d been coming since last year, used to frequent Mikell’s while it was still open. She shared Hilaire’s sentiments about the development of Columbus Square, but said the Jazz Legend Series is “the greatest.”

“Everybody have something to do on Friday that’s free, meeting and talking with other people. It’s good for us senior citizens,” she said.

Anniversary of death of James Brown Godfather of Soul - Died December 25th 2006 Christmas Day - Jon Hammond
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Brown
Brown died on Christmas Day 2006 from heart failure after becoming ill two days earlier and being hospitalized for hours. He is buried in Beech Island, South Carolina.
Brown often went on trips to his childhood neighborhood in Augusta and gave out money and other items to those he felt were in need. A week before his death in December 2006, a gravely ill-looking Brown took time to give out Christmas toys and turkeys to an Atlanta orphanage. Brown had done this several times over the years.
On Christmas Day, Brown died at approximately 1:45 am EST (06:45 UTC) from congestive heart failure resulting from complications of pneumonia, with his personal manager and longtime friend Charles Bobbit at his bedside.[85] According to Mr. Bobbit, Brown stuttered "I'm going away tonight", and then Brown took three long, quiet breaths and fell asleep before dying.[86]
[edit]Memorial services

Public memorial at the Apollo Theater in Harlem

Private funeral in Augusta, Georgia, with Michael Jackson attending
After Brown's death on Christmas Day, Brown's relatives and friends, a host of celebrities and thousands of fans attended public memorial services at the Apollo Theater in New York on December 28, 2006 and at the James Brown Arena on December 30, 2006 in Augusta, Georgia.[63] A separate, private memorial service was also held in North Augusta, South Carolina on December 29, 2006,[2] which was attended by Brown's family and close friends. Celebrities who attended Brown's public and/or private memorial services included Michael Jackson, Jimmy Cliff, Joe Frazier, Buddy Guy, Ice Cube, Ludacris, Dr. Dre, Little Richard, Dick Gregory, MC Hammer, Prince, Jesse Jackson, Ice-T, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bootsy Collins, LL Cool J, Li'l Wayne, Lenny Kravitz, 50 Cent, Stevie Wonder, and Don King, among others.[87][88][89][90] All of the public and private memorial services were officiated by Rev. Al Sharpton.[91][92]
Brown's public and private memorial ceremonies were elaborate, complete with costume changes for Brown and videos featuring him in concert performances. Brown's body, which was placed in a Promethean casket, which is bronze polished to a golden shine, was driven through the streets of New York to the Apollo Theater in a white, glass-encased horse-drawn carriage.[93][94] In Augusta, Georgia, the procession for Brown's public memorial visited Brown's statue as the procession made its way to the James Brown Arena. During the public memorial at the James Brown Arena, nachos and pretzels were served to mourners, as a video showed Brown's last performance in Augusta, Georgia and the Ray Charles version of "Georgia on My Mind" played soulfully in the background.[88][95][96] Brown's last backup band, The Soul Generals, also played the music of Brown's hits during the memorial service at the James Brown Arena. The group was joined by Bootsy Collins on bass, with MC Hammer performing a dance in James Brown style.[97] Former Temptations lead singer Ali-Ollie Woodson performed "Walk Around Heaven All Day" at the memorial services.

Jon Hammond: My original XB-2 Hammond organ, one of the very first pieces on the job here on world-wide radio broadcast on AFN - American Forces Network at Frankfurt Headquarters, actual video: http://youtu.be/S1DXhw1z_rc This remarkable film documents 3/17 1994 AFN POWERLITE Show live broadcast of JON HAMMOND Band playing and talking on-air with host MARGIE GLAD 'The Voice of AFN Europe" 873AM/MW at that time. First-ever public performance of original composition "Nu Funk" ("Hip Hop Chitlins"). The broadcast was heard world-wide and recorded and later released on Jon Hammond's album "Late Rent". Feb. 2012 Lou Colombo and Jon Hammond in Fort Myers Florida, R.I.P. Lou Colombo

From Capecodtoday
http://www.capecodtoday.com/blogs/index.php/2012/03/04/lou-colombo-killed?blog=125

Lou Colombo—Mr. Jazz on Cape Cod was killed Saturday night while exiting the parking lot at The Roadhouse Café on San Carlos Blvd. in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Musical Director at The Roadhouse Café, Richie Iannuzzi, said that Lou had just played a set before leaving to meet his wife, Noel. In addition to playing at The Roadhouse Café in Fort Myers, Lou also played at Pa Degennaro’s in Ft. Lauderdale.

The Roadhouse Café in Fort Myers is owned by Sherri Colombo and her husband Marc Neeley. It is a sister-club to the Roadhouse Café on South Street in Hyannis, Massachusetts, which is owned by David Colombo, Lou’s son, who is also the owner of Colombo’s on Main Street in Hyannis and The Black Cat Restaurant at Hyannis Harbor.

Reporting on Lou’s death saddens me greatly. Strangely enough, this very evening—Sunday—I was editing videotape of the last time I worked with Lou at Colombo’s. The video will be in an up-coming Dave Rojay Show on Channel 17, Saturday night at 9:30.

The only thing that can be said about Lou is that he was a great guy, a great friend, and a great trumpet player. He played holding his trumpet up with his right hand and blowing out of the right side of his mouth. As a trumpet player myself, I know how difficult this is; but Lou played with ease. He knew all the standards ever written and played them with great feeling and a beautiful tone and he had a tremendous rapport with his audience—a faithful long-running audience that loved him, truly.

I have so many memories of working with Lou going back many years in the past. He has appeared in several of my TV programs and he was often at Channel 17 recording for Ivy Sinclair, a producer of jazz television.

A couple of years ago, I played with Lou at the Roadhouse Café. Footage of this will also be in the up-coming Dave Rojay Show. Lou told me at the time that he was 82 years old and when I considered the strength and vitality of his playing, I was amazed.

As I type this, I am in a state of shock. A cremation for Lou is scheduled for Wednesday or Thursday in Florida with a Memorial Service to follow later on Cape Cod. My wife and I send our condolences to the entire Colombo family.

The last time I talked to Lou, we talked about a group picture of Cape Cod jazz artists scheduled for April. This photo shoot organized by jazz drummer, Bart Weisman, was to duplicate the famous photo from the past of renowned jazz artists on the steps of a brownstone in New York. No photo of the jazz artists of Cape Cod will be complete without Lou Colombo in the center.

"Meet The Incredible Sk1 Hammond with Michael Falkenstein and Jon Hammond"
First look at this exciting new keyboard product weighing in at 7 kilos, just over 15 lbs., it sounds like a real Hammond B3 organ with Leslie, or a full size grand piano, any type of famous vintage electric piano or synthesizer. This keyboard does it all and with original Hammond drawbars and it's feather light. Sk1 has a built in USB flash drive input, the keys are 'bullet proof' waterfall style keys that can hold up to extreme pressure of rockin' rock musicians, swinging jazz musicians and can even sound like a huge pipe organ. This film will blow your mind.

This was a very bizarre gig, I showed up and somebody from the club told me an admirer sent a huge flowers arrangement, it turned out to be from Bert Padell who I had personally invited to the gig - he sent a note with it with good luck wishes - I had the display in lobby of my building after the gig until it finally died - must have cost a fortune!

Jon Hammond We played there a few times actually. Snooze ya' lose, we won't be there again most likely. In over 40 years I wouldn't call any gigs regular - some were better than others and some more steady. The days of taking up residency in one club location have pretty much been over since early 70's in my experience. Stay tuned for my upcoming book "Weird gigs I have played" by Jon Hammond

Jon Hammond Eric: Bernard always played Sonor during that time on my gigs, with Sabian cymbals - his Salmon colored Sonor Signature kit with 18" kick always, and starting from this gig he got the hi-lite set, much lighter in weight than the Sonor Signature cans, Jon Hammond

Many thanks, John. I own his Slingerland kit -- my reason for asking. Thanks for posting such great videos and pics over the years. I love "Late Rent"!

One of the nicest people you'd like to meet and talk to. Met him in Montreal and he visited me cuppla times at that place on mass ave.
