Kernel Panic Ensemble

Kernel Panic

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_panic

Jon Hammond here in New York City folks,

I had my first case of kernel panic here on my computer and I decided it would be a good name for

a band, so here it is...introducing The Kernel Panic Ensemble !

For those of you who don't know what kernel panic is, it's way beyond my scope of technical

knowledge, but I know a little bit more about it now that I have experienced kernel panic, and

it's all about what happens in my underlying content and media on my HammondCast broadcasts on

KYOU Radio and my cable tv show The Jon Hammond Show now in 27th year on MNNTV and streaming

worldwide.

Here is the definition according to one our most trusted sources Wikipedia:

Thanks for visiting, tuning in watching and listening, sincerely, Jon Hammond

kernel panic is an action taken by an operating system upon detecting an internal fatal error from which it cannot safely recover. The term is largely specific to Unix and Unix-like systems; for Microsoft Windows operating systems the equivalent term is "Bug check" (or, colloquially, "Blue Screen of Death").
The kernel routines that handle panics (in AT&T-derived and BSD Unix source code, a routine known as panic()) are generally designed to output an error message to the console, dump an image of kernel memory to disk for post-mortem debugging and then either wait for the system to be manually rebooted, or initiate an automatic reboot.[1] The information provided is of highly technical nature and aims to assist a system administrator or software developer in diagnosing the problem.
Attempts by the operating system to read an invalid or non-permitted memory address are a common source of kernel panics. A panic may also occur as a result of a hardware failure or a bug in the operating system. In many cases, the operating system could continue operation after memory violations have occurred. However, the system is in an unstable state and rather than risking security breaches and data corruption, the operating system stops to prevent further damage and facilitate diagnosis of the error.
The kernel panic was introduced in an early version of Unix and demonstrated a major difference between the design philosophies of Unix and its predecessor Multics. Multics developer Tom van Vleck recalls a discussion of this change with Unix developer Dennis Ritchie:
I remarked to Dennis that easily half the code I was writing in Multics was error recovery code. He said, "We left all that stuff out. If there's an error, we have this routine called panic, and when it is called, the machine crashes, and you holler down the hall, 'Hey, reboot it.'"[2]
The original panic() function was essentially unchanged from Fifth Edition UNIX to the VAX-based UNIX 32V and output only an error message with no other information, then dropped the system into an endless idle loop. As the Unix codebase was enhanced, the panic()function was also enhanced to dump various forms of debugging information to the console.

[edit]Mac OS X

Mac OS X 10.6 kernel panic.
Kernel panics also appear in Mac OS X. These can appear while booting up or when using an application. Once they show up they tell the user that they need to reboot the system (except for versions below 10.2).[3] They vary from version to version:
  • 10.0 - 10.1.5: The system prints out numbers and words detailing the error on-screen and then the system becomes unresponsive.
  • 10.2 - 10.2.8: Similar to the current versions of the kernel panic except the text is more spaced out and the background is pink.
  • 10.3 - 10.5.8: The background is now black, but with the same language translations and the same text as version 10.2.
  • 10.6 - 10.6.5: The text is different and now features a Spanish language translation.
In all versions above 10.2 the text is in front of a standby symbol and is not full screen. Debugging information is saved in NVRAM and written to a log file on reboot.

Where the old building meets the new building

The New Laguna Honda

December 7, 2010

We will miss the old building is a big improvement. As William Frazier put it, it has evolved from

Wards to Units and now finally to Neighborhoods.

From Wikipedia:

"The central building is the Pavilion, which will be the site of the Rehabilitation Center and the hospital’s acute care services. Sixty people receiving short term care will live in the Pavilion. Two new residence buildings to the north and south of the Pavilion will house 720 residents in households of 15 people each. Every household will have its own living room and dining room. Each floor in the residence buildings will function as a neighborhood of four households, or 60 people, participating in one of the specialized skilled nursing programs:

Memory Care, for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias; Enhanced Support, for people living with the effects of stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis or other degenerative diseases, and other complex or chronic conditions; Integrated Wellness, for people with behavioral support needs; Positive Care, for people with HIV/AIDS; Chinese and Spanish Language Communities, for monolingual speakers.
Neighborhoods are organized around a central Great Room where daily activities will take place.
Most residents will live in suites of two or three single rooms with a shared bathroom. Some residents will share a room with one or two other people. There are also some single rooms with private baths. Every room will have operable windows overlooking the 62-acre (250,000 m2) campus."

Jon Hammond (has played 13 years at Laguna Honda) is one of the musicians who plays regularly for the
residents from Local 6 Musicians Union, seen here on 6th floor of the original building

The effect of the music is amazingly therapeutic says Jon Hammond,

"I have often seen people get out of their wheelchairs and dance"

From "The Insider" in-house newspaper

A Musical Performer in the Spotlight: JON HAMMOND by Paul A. Hendrickson F3

A Musical Performer in the Spotlight: JON HAMMOND by Paul A. Hendrickson F3

One of the Musical Performers we get here at Laguna Honda is Jon Hammond. He has been playing here for quite a long time. He would mention in passing, between songs, some celebrities that are household names. It was done in such a way that it sounded as if he had met some of these people. Come to find out, he had.

After I got to talking to Jon, I realized that the polish he brings to his jazz piano and to Laguna Honda is no fluke. Jon resides mostly in New York City. He has a place in Times Square. In his neighborhood alone he met Paul Newman, Joanne woodward, and Al Pacino. He also has a Cable Access show there. On his Show he has interviewed people who he has found interesting. His favorite was Lionel Hampton, the reknowned vibe player. “At 80 years old, he was full of energy.”

Another he enjoyed had been Cab Calloway. This was after his re-emergence from the “Blues Brothers” movie. He mentions as one of his non-musician guests to be none other than Andy Warhol. It seems that Andy was interested in the computer Graphics and Artwork that jon and his crew used on the Show.

Though he plays a “jazz organ” on his CD’s and with his Band, Jon has been banging on the piano from about age six. When the Beatles came on the scene in ‘64, Jon with most others his age, decided to become a “Rock” star. He tried his hand at this. He had some groups ranging in name from “Hades” to “Contraband”. He becomes thoughtful at this moment. “‘Contraband’ was a pretty good band.” At age thirteen he got his first electric-accordion.

Jon has a small collection of accordions - mostly electric. He has inked a deal with Excelsior, and plays their accordions exclusively. He also notes that eBay the computer sales website is a good source if you know what you’re looking for. Jon mentions that he will be playing accordion for Broadway’s own “Fiddler on The Roof.” “Whenver I learn the book.” He says it is about as thick as a telephone book.

His latest group is made up of the “Late Rent Session Men”. As the name implies, whenever Jon is a little short and behind on his Rent, his landlord takes some music in trade.

Jon plays every month at Laguna Honda. Look for the fliers and catch his show. I asked him why someone who trots the globe makes such frequent stops at Laguna Honda Hospital. He says, “Well, my Father was a Physician. My Grandfather was a Physician. I’m a Musician. I like to see the people smile.” Jon does his “therapy” in another way. He hopes to be one of the first performers when they build the “New Hospital.” Happy New Year.

*Note: Special thanks, Paul A. Hendrickson, Jon

First Production Skateboard from Jon Hammond Collection with his Sennheiser Headphones and Mic

Jon's Roller Derby Skate Board circa 1959

Jon Hammond uses his Sennheiser HD 25-1 Headphones the industry standard, so much

that they appear to be disintegrating but still work and sound excellent.

 His emergency

use microphone is a Sennheiser e604 originally designed for mic'ing up drums, with

his custom made short cable from NDR Radio engineers, it can be plugged in

to any available input on short notice for announcements and voiceovers

The closed-back HD 25-1 IIs are purpose-designed, professional monitoring headphones offering high attenuation of background noise. Capable of handling very high sound pressure levels and of extremely robust construction, these headphones perform exceptionally well in high-noise environments, e.g. ENG, sound reinforcement, studio monitoring and audio equipment testing. The capsule is rotatable for one-ear listening. Ideal monitoring headphones for cameramen and DJs.

*note: Jon's windscreen on e604 is now held on by Scotch Tape
The e 604 is a cardioid microphone especially suitable for use with drums and brass instruments.
Features
  • Rugged reinforced glass-fibre body
  • Low sensitivity to impact and handling noise
  • Very high sound pressure handling capability
  • Low distortion microphone
  • Hum compensating coil

Roller Derby Skateboard

First introduced in 1959, the Roller Derby skateboard was the first mass-produced skateboard. It was basically a one-tip wooden plank with modified roller skates attached to it. Completely lacking features which nowadays are common for skateboards, the Roller Derby had no concave or even kicktails, not to mention grip tape, and like all early skateboards, it featured steelwheels which offered little to no grip on most riding surfaces.
