Who is Jon Hammond?
Jon began his musical career at age 12 in the San Francisco Bay Area playing organ and accordion in bands and solo engagements, first recording studio dates 1968 when he met Robert Moog who personally delivered the Moog III to San Francisco Radical Laboratories where Jon was working at the time and jamming daily with members of Quicksilver Messenger Service, he next joined original rock band Hades with which he played until moving East to attend Berklee.
Playing 7 nights a week in Boston’s notorious Combat Zone next lead to touring with successful show band Easy Living and then became house organist at the exclusive Wychmere Harbor Club Cape Cod MA where he played private parties for Tip O’Neill Speaker of The House. Returning to SF for a reunion concert in 1980 with Eddie Money and members of Tower of Power, next Jon moved to Europe where he lived and played for a number of years, still playing annually where he has an enthusiastic following. Jon began hosting his own TV show “The Jon Hammond Show” in 1984 and is now in 30th year on cable TV in Manhattan and heard daily on KYOU Radio HammondCast Show with regular appearances at international trade shows.

Posted on 01 September 2014 by Shaun Gah
QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA - The music products industry gathered again on Queensland's Gold Coast for professional development sessions and a two-day trade show. Almost 500 professionals, covering a wide range of Australian music industry suppliers and retailers, took part at the Australian Music Association Convention which was held in the ever-popular Jupiters Casino.
The convention featured a number of notable key speakers and accomplished musicians to keep attendees educated as well as entertained. Amongst the key figures were Larry Morton, current NAMM Chairman and President of Hal Leonard Corporation; Jon Hammond, renowned Hammond organ player and founder of the Jon Hammond Band; Ambre Hammond (no-relation to Jon) leading Australian piano musician and Guinness record holder for receiving Associate and Licentiate Diplomas of music at the age of 11; and Lloyd Spiegel, one of Australia's leading blues guitarists.
Bosch Communications Systems, a regular at AMAC, exhibited the latest products from our Electro-Voice and Dynacord brands including EV's ZLX, ELX and ETX Powered Loudspeaker families, and Dynacord's TS Vertical Array Cabinets, the tiny but feature-packed PM 502 Powered Mixer, and the versatile AXM 12A Coaxial Powered Monitor with onboard DSP.
For the first time in EV's history, the brand had three “best-in-class” loudspeaker families on display covering entry-level through to pro-audio markets. ZLX loudspeakers are the number one selling powered speakers in the American market and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2013. The 2000 W ETX powered loudspeakers have been labelled as the most advanced product in its price range and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2014. Sitting in between is the ever-popular ELX range which represents a high-quality sound system at a mid-range price.
The ETX loudspeaker display drew a lot of attention during the show, including that of Jon Hammond, one of the finest B3 players in the world. Jon reminisced about his first experience with EV speakers back in 1964, when he installed EV SRO speakers in a Fender Band-Master, partially visible in the image below.
“I have a particular fondness for EV speakers. My very first pro amplifier was a 1964 blonde Fender Band-Master in which I installed the white EV SRO Speakers. Yes, I lugged that 2 x 12 speaker box around everywhere and it was impossible to blow it up - my whole band would plug in to it, we thought in those days because the amp was called Band-Master that the whole band should plug in to it, bass and all - no problem and it was loud and clear!”
From left to right: Simon Ert on Gretsch Drums, Chris Connolly on Grover Jackson Guitar and the legendary “Buchanan Hammer” EV 664 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone, and Jon Hammond on Hammond Sk1, mixed using Dynacord PowerMate 600 and played through ETX Powered Loudspeakers.
After swapping a few stories Jon was curious to see how his Hammond Sk1 would sound with the ETX loudspeakers. Following a quick connection via a Dynacord PowerMate 600, Jon belted a few tunes just before the close of day one of the exhibition. He promised to come back the following day with a jazz guitarist who turned out to be Chris Connolly, a well known figure in the audio and music products industry. While setting up for the jam session Simon Ert, a jazz percussionist representing Gretsch drums on the neighbouring stand, volunteered to complete the trio. What followed was half an hour of cool jazz tunes and sweet sound.
Check out an excerpt of the performance on YouTube: http://youtu.be/SPHi-VBY6zI
“I love coming to the AMAC shows, in just a few years I have forged some lasting friendships and am fortunate enough to meet some really outstanding musicians” said Jon. “The timing was perfect to have a session like that what we did - thank you so much for accommodating us with the superb EV powered speakers. I heard from friends who were all the way across the hall that they could hear us clear as a bell. It was so much fun, that's the kind of thing I live for and only happens in a special place and people such as the EV stand at AMAC!”

By Jim Harrington http://www.mercurynews.com/entertainment/ci_26552568/review-this-aint-no-mouse-music-fascinating-story
Chris Strachwitz has spent the past 54 years unearthing musical treasures, journeying into the shadows of America to record all sorts of artists who might otherwise never be documented.
His travels have fueled Arhoolie Records, the El Cerrito-based roots-music label that has issued 400-plus albums and more than 6,500 songs since its founding in 1960. Now, Strachwitz's long, strange trip is nicely chronicled in "This Ain't No Mouse Music!"
The documentary illustrates the dramatic impact Strachwitz's efforts have had on the music world -- and on "world music." Notably, it shows how the Arhoolie recordings greatly helped popularize Cajun, Tex-Mex, bluegrass and other regional music styles while bringing some much-needed attention to such significant musicians as Tejano accordionist Flaco Jimenez, zydeco titan Clifton Chenier, bluegrass great Del McCoury and Texas bluesman Mance Lipscomb.
Given that impressive list, it shouldn't be a surprise that the soundtrack is one of the best things about "This Ain't No Mouse Music!" It's a remarkably diverse collection of styles and artists that -- like the Arhoolie catalog itself -- is simply sewn together with the common thread of Strachwitz's personal taste in music.
"I didn't want to record stuff that I didn't like," he explains in the movie, providing a de facto mission statement for his label.
Yet, Strachwitz seems at a loss when he tries to describe exactly what it is that attracts him to a song or artist.
"I don't know why I like it so much," he says about some unnamed piece of music in the film. "It's just got some guts to it. It ain't wimpy, that's for sure. It ain't no mouse music."

The film never really defines "mouse music," but we're given the impression that it's music of the overly produced, highly commercial variety. And, yes, it's a safe bet that you won't hear "mouse music" on an Arhoolie record.
The film begins -- much like Strachwitz's career in music -- with the blues. Strachwitz is shown walking through the Arhoolie offices, housed in the back of his low-key record shop Down Home Music on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito, with an album in hand. He takes it over to the turntable and drops the needle -- unleashing Lightnin' Hopkins' "Big Mama Jump" -- and then smiles like a kid in a candy store.
He's not just mugging for the camera. That's Strachwitz in a nutshell -- a man who still dearly loves listening to music after more than a half-century in the business. And that's a mighty rare situation in the music industry.
"This Ain't No Mouse Music" works, in large part, because of Strachwitz's unbridled -- and some would say unrivaled -- enthusiasm for Americana music. He comes across on film exactly like he does in person: passionate, opinionated, motivated and incredibly down to earth. I interviewed Strachwitz in 2011, on the occasion of Arhoolie's 50th anniversary celebration, and the quotes from that chat read like slices of dialogue from this documentary.
He's a natural storyteller, blessed with many great yarns as well as a magnetic presence in front of the camera. Directors-producers Chris Simon and Maureen Gosling wisely keep the focus on him, fleshing out the briskly paced film with short interviews from other members of Arhoolie's extended family and representative music clips.
The film devotes the bare minimum to Strachwitz' boyhood in Germany and the family's flight in the 1940s to America, where he fell in love with the cornucopia of sounds coming out of his radio -- hillbilly country, Mexican music, gospel, blues, etc. The film really takes flight after he moves to the Bay Area to attend UC Berkeley and embarks on series of musical treasure hunts to record artists deserving of wider exposure. The first Arhoolie release was the blues record "Mance Lipscomb: Texas Sharecropper and Songster" in 1960.
Watching people work in a recording studio can be as interesting as watching paint dry. Fortunately, Strachwitz favors "field recordings" -- where an artist is taped in his or her local environs, no matter how rustic -- which makes for some fascinating footage.
"My stuff isn't produced. I just catch it as it is," he says in the film. "I never had a studio -- I never wanted a studio. Because I knew that the music I liked was all over the place."

HammondCast 15 for KYOU Radio, this show just before Jon blasts over to Hamburg Germany to record a new album at NDR Radio. Special guest recordings of Jon with radio legend Al Jazzbeaux Collins telling the story of Jon's composition "Train Song" and with Chuy Varela talking about the meaning of Jon's song "Get Back In The Groove" played 2 different ways: from "Hammond's Bolero" CD 2003 release (instrumental) and a 1981 version from DTI Records label with Frank Biner on vocals and Jon covering all the instruments + Dave Danza on the drums. Last song: "Czechoslovakian Salsa Song"-JON HAMMOND Trio.
